Through the observation window, Nicole saw countless creatures moving through the water. Squid, octopuses, sea snakes, sharks, glowing jellyfish, and plenty of species she couldn't even identify.
The deep blue ocean and strange marine life were breathtaking.
She could also make out other submarines in the distance, all from the military base.
Nicole watched the creatures outside and frowned. "Don't they look...bigger than they used to?"
And not just bigger. Uglier, too.
Jacob explained, "During the extreme heat, the polar ice caps melted and released ancient viruses into the ocean. A lot of marine life mutated.
"They didn't just grow larger. Some became deformed, and many turned much more aggressive.
"Once, I took a group of trainees out and we ran into a pack of bull sharks. They were several times their normal size and actually attacked the submarine.
"Their bite force was incredible. If the hull hadn't been made from reinforced materials, they might've damaged it."
It wasn't just sharks. Plenty of sea creatures that used to be relatively harmless had become dangerously aggressive.
Jacob told them about every dangerous situation he had run into at sea and how to avoid the same problems.
"If you can stay away from them, do it. If you can't, shut everything down and stay quiet. Don't attack unless your lives depend on it.
"Once they're provoked, they get even more aggressive, and blood in the water can draw in other creatures. The last thing you want is a whole swarm around the submarine."
The hull was tough, but damage to any external equipment could still cause serious trouble, especially the turbines.
For four straight days, they practiced nonstop. Aside from sleeping, the three of them practically lived in the control room, running through the procedures again and again until every control started to feel familiar.
The training period was short, but repetition helped make up for it.
After so many drills, Nicole could practically operate the submarine with her eyes closed.
They spent four days out in the open ocean before finally heading back to the deep-water port.
When Nicole climbed out through the hatch, sunlight hit her face, and a warm breeze brushed past her.
For a moment, it felt like she'd come back from another world.
There were even more submarines at the port now. Jacob looked over the water. "Yours should be ready by now."
