**Chapter 148: What Marlon Left Behind**
“Wait a moment. Was that the same card he had handed to Thora?”
Marlon’s card.

Now, it seemed as if Thora was using his card to procure equipment from him. This meant, ultimately, he was the one taking a financial hit in the end.
Darius’s face darkened, a storm brewing in his eyes as he processed the situation. Thora, maintaining her composure, withdrew the card with a serious demeanor. “Even though we are legally bound as mates, this situation pertains to the entire Wolffang unit. I want to ensure that you don’t suffer a financial loss due to our arrangement. I’ll reach out to General Stanton later to coordinate the payment with you.”
Her tone was strictly professional, drawing a clear line between their personal relationship and their business dealings.
This only deepened the furrow in Darius’s brow.
So, in her eyes… they were merely business associates?
Thora didn’t linger to ponder his reaction. “I have training scheduled for this afternoon. I need to leave now.”
With that, she turned on her heel and exited, only to realize once she stepped outside that her patience had been severely tested today.
Strangely, the anger she had felt towards Darius earlier had dissipated like morning mist.
Yet, just as Thora’s spirits began to lift, someone else’s mood plummeted to the depths.
Back inside the R&D center, a palpable chill enveloped the room.
Every technician on the floor kept their heads down, their fingers flying over keyboards, not daring to make a sound that might provoke the Alpha’s wrath.
Fortunately for them, Darius’s ire was directed elsewhere at that moment.
Half an hour later, Darius reclined in his office chair, the phone pressed against his ear as he spoke with Hugo.
“General Stanton, I trust you recognize the immense value of Skybound’s R&D department. And let’s be honest, Wolffang isn’t exactly strapped for cash, are they?” Darius’s voice dripped with a mocking undertone, each word carefully chosen to unsettle.
On the other end of the line, Hugo was drowning in anxiety.
Negotiating with one of the world’s most formidable corporate titans? It felt like a descent into madness.
He recalled a time when Darius had been more laid-back, but today, every word felt like a loaded gun, each sentence inching him closer to a precipice.
At this point, he couldn’t help but wonder, Had someone really angered Darius, and was he now the unfortunate soul left to bear the brunt of it?
Clearing his throat, Hugo ventured, “Mr. Blackwood, regarding the price… do you think there’s any room for negotiation?”
Someone had aided Laurel in erasing evidence of a murder, and their target had been this key—or rather, whatever the key was meant to unlock.
But the key had been with Marlon. It hadn’t surfaced in any of Thora’s inherited memories, indicating that Laurel had no means to acquire it.
Back at the base, Thora removed the chain from around her neck, her gaze fixated on the box before her, her brows knitted in concentration.
This was the item stored in the vault.
It appeared to be wood, yet it was something entirely different—some kind of metal alloy.
A material capable of withstanding the ravages of time, buried deep underground for millions of years without ever succumbing to decay.
She inserted the key into the lock. The moment it clicked open, a surge of energy pulsed violently within her chest, as if her very soulstone was reacting to the revelation.
