“I’m not trying to help you. I’m only doing this because of Darius.”
Thora’s voice was cool and emotionless as she mumbled to herself. But somehow, it quietly brushed away some of the chill in Draven’s eyes.
The black energy he had released drew back into his body, and the tension around him eased.
Suddenly, another clap of thunder boomed through the air.
Draven’s grip tightened around Thora’s arm as he buried his face in her shoulder, his entire body trembling.
Thora pressed a hand to her forehead in resignation.
Is this really the same arrogant man from a moment ago? He’s actually this scared of thunder?
“Thora, let me take over your body,” Amie volunteered in Thora’s mind. “He’s way too tall. It’ll be easier for me to carry him.”
Thora kept walking and declined calmly. “That’s not necessary. He’s not Darius. He doesn’t deserve that much from us.”
Saving him was already more than enough for Darius’s sake. She wasn’t about to reveal her other trump cards so soon.
Her ability and wolf spirit were her greatest assets on this island-she would never risk them for someone irrelevant.
Draven drifted off to sleep behind her, but his body still from lingering fear.
Thora took a deep breath and pressed forward through the mud, each step heavier than the last.
Inside the monitoring room, pouring rain blurred out most of the surveillance feeds.
“This rain will make it harder for the candidates to find their way,” Sergio said solemnly.
Valen didn’t seem worried. He tapped the table. “That just makes things more interesting. The strong are never trapped by the environment.”
He scanned the monitors, frowning slightly.
Quite a few candidates had already found blind spots to hide from the cameras. It was to be expected- anyone who made it to the Blue Star Military Academy tests wasn’t ordinary. Figuring out the surveillance system was only a matter of time.
“Pull up the feeds for the candidates who stood out the inost.”
“Yes, sir!”
Soon, info on more than a dozen candidates appeared on the screens. Valen’s eyes locked onto three-No. 230 Thora, No. 79 Draven, and No. 9 Ashley.

He already knew everything about Thora’s background, but Draven and Ashley’s files were all encrypted- both were using false identities.
Most applicants to Blue Star Military Academy used real information, but some candidates backed by the Empire or elite families could apply under fake names.
As long as they met the requirements, those files were sealed and encrypted. During their time at the academy, they could use those fake identities.
Ashley and Draven were two of those candidates-their pasts a complete mystery.
What caught Valen’s attention even more was that both had crossed paths with Thora.
Thinking of Thora, Valen’s feelings turned complicated. The contrast between her casual lateness and her perfect performance in the tests made her seem like two different people.
He put those thoughts aside for now and focused on the rain-soaked surveillance feed. “It’s dark now. Those who’ve been hiding in the shadows will soon come out and kill.”
Sergio nodded in agreement, eyes glued to the monitors.
At the same time, deep in a surveillance dead zone on the island, a massacre in the darkness had just ended.
Some had formed teams to snatch number tags, some killed to steal map fragments, and some worked as silent executioners” clearing out the rule-breakers.
Ashley clearly belonged to the type who stood above the rules.
She glanced back at the bodies in the bloody water, pinching a few bloodstained number tags between her fingers, her lips curling with satisfaction.
She’d hit two birds with one stone-taking out her target and getting the fragments.
Now, only her last target remained…
Still smiling, she noticed the blood on her palm, and her face darkened as if her hand had been dirtied.
She pulled a handkerchief from her pocket to clean her hands, then tossed the dirty cloth aside.
This dark, unmonitored corner was the best place to dump bodies.
The steady rain washed away the blood, and when the lightning flashed, it glinted off her blue hair.
The next instant, she vanished into the dense woods.
She was barely gone when several pairs of combat boots stepped into the clearing.
