**Shadows Hearts by Joseph King**
**Chapter 39: First Power Base**
**Thora’s POV:**
A message chimed on my phone, pulling me from my thoughts. It was from Harvey: “There’s a match at the underground fight club in three days. Are you coming?”
Since that fateful day when I had helped Harvey and his crew out of a tight spot, there had been a noticeable shift in their demeanor towards me. It was as if a wall had crumbled, and we had swiftly transitioned into a kind of camaraderie that felt both unexpected and exhilarating.
Whenever something significant was brewing at the underground fight club, Harvey was quick to reach out to me. His eagerness to include me in this hidden world was palpable, and I couldn’t help but feel a thrill at the thought of finally stepping into that unregulated arena I had been so curious about for what felt like ages.
I typed a quick confirmation, my fingers dancing over the screen, when Felix’s voice broke through the quiet of the room, laced with annoyance. “Thora, I’m still right here, you know.”
I glanced up, slightly startled. “Do you still have something else you need?”
Felix, with his characteristic nose rub, seemed to hesitate. “Have you gotten your outfit ready for tomorrow night’s banquet?”
I raised an eyebrow, confusion washing over me. “Why would I need to prepare an outfit? It’s just dinner. How formal does it need to be?”
He lingered, casting around as if searching for a topic, his restlessness palpable.
Then, out of nowhere, his expression shifted to something far more serious. “Thora, do you remember Mom?”
His sudden gravity caught me off guard. My heart raced as I asked cautiously, “What are you trying to say?”
Felix’s face tightened, and he took a moment, as if weighing his words carefully. “One day when you weren’t home, I had just gotten out of the shower and was passing by Laurel’s room. Her door was ajar. I saw her on the phone, and I distinctly heard her mention our mother’s name—Diane Talon.”
His revelation sent a wave of contemplation crashing over me.
Laurel had never brought up Diane without a reason. In the fragments of Thora’s original memories, that name had never once crossed her lips voluntarily.
There had to be something deeper at play here.
Both Felix and I were left with only photographs and fading memories of our mother. Diane had vanished from our lives when Felix was just a mere two months old, the tragic tale being that she had been taken by rampaging Rogues during one of her outings.
And then there was Laurel, who had stepped into our lives only three months after Diane’s tragic departure.
I turned my gaze toward the door, my brow furrowing in thought. It appeared that the web of our family history was far more tangled than I had initially believed.
“Understood. I’ll look into this,” I replied, my voice firm with resolve. “But from now on, don’t mention this to anyone at home, okay?”
Felix continued to bombard me with random topics for a little while longer, his chatter a mix of innocent curiosity and lingering unease. Eventually, after I promised him a gaming session, he grudgingly took his leave.
Once the door clicked shut behind him, I hesitated before logging into the game. Instead, I opened my laptop, my fingers deftly navigating to add one last firewall to the encryption system I had meticulously crafted.
