**Shadows Hearts by Joseph King**
**Chapter 69: Hidden Cards**
Thora’s gaze turned icy, a chill settling in the air around her. She fixed her eyes beyond Shirley, her expression a mask of determination. Suspended in the space just half a foot from Shirley’s forehead was a bullet, its surface glinting ominously with a faint, pulsating energy. Time seemed to stretch, the atmosphere thick with tension, before the silence shattered with a sharp crack as the bullet reversed its trajectory.
“Ah!” Shirley gasped, her heart racing.
In an instant, the bullet tore through the forehead of a mercenary, who collapsed lifelessly to the ground, a stark reminder of the violence that surrounded them.
It was only then that the reality of the situation began to dawn on Shirley. “What was that…” she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, a mix of awe and confusion.
Thora, however, offered no explanation. Instead, she stepped forward with purpose, swiftly collecting the weapons and ammunition from the two fallen mercenaries. “A dying counterattack. We need to prepare for the next point,” she instructed, her tone brisk and commanding.
If circumstances had been different, Thora would have hesitated to wield her power so openly. The danger they faced was palpable, pushing her to act. Her abilities were growing stronger with each passing moment, yet she knew they were still a last resort, especially before Amie awoke.
The college had fallen victim to a horde of mercenaries driven by greed and malice. Thora couldn’t shake the feeling of dread; she had no idea how many more formidable foes, like that woman, awaited them. Their leader, Lance Wright, was a user of awakened wolf spirit abilities, a force to be reckoned with.
If she were to encounter him while her mental energy was depleted from overusing her powers, she knew the outcome would be fatal. The weight of that reality pressed heavily on her. She had to conserve her strength, to remain vigilant.
Moreover, users of abilities were a rarity in this world, and she had no desire to attract unwanted attention by revealing her capabilities.
Shirley, though curious, refrained from pressing for more information. In her past life, within the shadows of the assassin group, she had witnessed individuals with extraordinary skills, yet what Thora had just accomplished left her utterly stunned.
With a firm grip on the sniper rifle, Shirley vanished once more, positioning herself to cover Thora from the rear. It felt peculiar to her, this newfound instinct to follow Thora’s lead. She had never been one to take orders, yet now, without a word, she understood her role in their silent dance of teamwork.
The unspoken bond between them felt exhilarating, a rush of adrenaline coursing through her veins. For the first time in her life, she felt the warmth of trust—Thora’s unwavering faith in her abilities was a revelation.

On the rooftop, a voice broke through the tension. “Boss, the Astralis Army has surrounded Astralis College. What are our next steps?”
