**Chapter 77: Fire in the Library**
A piercing scream sliced through the tense atmosphere, sending ripples of panic through the crowd. The girls instinctively clamped their hands over their ears, retreating in fear, their eyes wide with terror.
“Th-Thora… what are you doing!” Hazel’s voice trembled, each word laced with a mix of disbelief and dread. The sound of her own shrieking echoed back at her, amplifying her fear.
Despite the powerful wolf spirit that surged within her, the moment she faced the muzzle of a gun, the acrid scent of gunpowder flooded her senses, and her instincts screamed at her to flee, to hide, rather than to fight. Her heart raced violently, pounding against her ribcage as if it might leap free.
No, Thora wouldn’t dare kill her. She wouldn’t.
Hazel clung to that thought, repeating it over and over in her mind as if it were a lifeline thrown into turbulent waters.
Thora stood before her, an embodiment of icy resolve, her features sharp and unyielding, devoid of any flicker of compassion.
“Spreading lies. Stirring chaos. People like you deserve to die.” Her voice was low, steady, a chilling whisper that hung in the air like a death knell. “And what I said before—you still remember, right?”
It sounded like an inquiry, yet there was no hint of uncertainty in her tone.
Hazel felt the weight of those words settle heavily on her chest, a sentence of doom that constricted her heart. Of course, she remembered.
The memory surged back to her—the moment when Thora had returned from the cliff, bruised and furious. Hazel had attempted to “teach her a lesson,” and instead, Thora had flattened her into the dirt.
Thora had warned her then; if she stirred up trouble again, the consequences would be far worse than a mere broken hand.
Hazel’s thoughts raced as she recalled her past mistakes, how she had once allied with rogues, nearly leading Thora to her demise. She understood all too well why Thora would seek vengeance.
Was she really going to die here, in front of all these witnesses?
Hazel stumbled back, her eyes desperately scanning the crowd for someone, anyone, who might intervene.
“She’s lost it! She’s going to kill me!” Her voice cracked, a raw edge of panic slicing through her words. “Thora! You can’t kill me! Dad will kill you!”
In a heartbeat, Thora’s hand moved with lethal precision. Just when it seemed she would pull the trigger, she suddenly swung the gun to the side.
Hazel gasped as the stock of the weapon slammed into her arm, a jolt of pain radiating through her body that sent her sprawling to the ground.
“Ah!” she cried out, cradling her arm, the shock nearly numbing her senses as she rolled on the floor, gasping for breath.
“Ms. Hazel!” Caleb, despite his own injuries, rushed to her side, concern etched across his face.
She remained composed, her eyes locked on the mercenaries advancing through the doors.
They moved with precision, boxing everyone in with a chilling efficiency. Their expressions were devoid of warmth, flat and cold, their intent clear: to kill everyone in sight.
Astralis College’s explosion defenses were still operational, and Thora had already disabled the main bomb.
This meant that a relentless barrage of gunfire would be the quickest route to eradicate the survivors.
The mercenaries formed a line, their black boots thudding in unison against the marble floor, each step resonating like a hammer striking the crowd’s collective heart.
Clack—
The ominous sound of bullets chambering filled the air, a harbinger of violence. Dozens of muzzles rose in unison, black and hollow, aimed directly at the terrified teachers and students. The faint gleam of metal shimmered ominously, suffused with a cold, deadly intent.
The lead mercenary’s eyes were void of emotion, his voice flat and unyielding as he issued the chilling command, “Kill.”
And in that instant, every finger on the triggers tightened, ready to unleash chaos.
