After the congratulations settled, Joanna got right to the point.

“I’ll be straightforward with all of you. Everyone here fought hard today, and I’m not dismissing that. But if I hadn’t arrived when ! did, this battle wouldn’t have ended in a win. Some of you wouldn’t have made it out.”

It was blunt. It was also true, and everyone who was present knew it.

The Demon God corpses represented an enormous volume of resources, and Joanna wasn’t going to pretend otherwise or give them away out of politeness. These were Mythic-tier entities. The modifiers alone were irreplaceable.

The assembled gods looked awkward, dignity slightly bruised, but none of them argued. Joanna had killed the Demon Gods. She’d saved their lives. Expecting a share of the spoils on top of that would have been pushing it.

“That said,” she continued, “I couldn’t have ascended today without help. My professor was the first to coordinate with me on the kills. And Kevin held the line when it mattered most, took the hits, drew their attention, and didn’t break.”

Kevin’s reckless bravado had been the reason she’d been able to move freely enough to take down those final four. In a very real sense, his death had made her ascension possible.

Joanna had paid her debts.

“Professor Carpenter and Kevin each get one Demon God corpse. Once you take it out of containment it’ll convert into godfall land, so let me know now if you’d rather have the modifiers directly.”

he’d lost.

“For everyone else, I’ll put one corpse into the common pool to split however you see fit. The rest stays with me.”

The mood lifted immediately.

Joanna walked away from the field with 20 Demon God corpses. Even by her standards, that was excessive wealth. The others had received a fraction of that, but then again, walking away alive at all had been far from guaranteed.

“Kevin’s back. What about Feran?”

“Check if his merit record qualifies him for a revival. Beyond that, his believers wit! need to carry it.”
