Chapter 123
Hathaway found an old car in her garage that hadn’t been driven in ages, started it up, and headed to the hotel.
Outside the Blackwood Hotel, the place was already buzzing with activity. Reporters from all over were swarming the entrance with their gear.
Hathaway didn’t dare get too close. She circled around and parked in the lot of the chain hotel right across from Blackwood Hotel, snagging a prime spot.
She turned off the engine and sat quietly in the driver’s seat.
From here, she had a perfect view of the entrance to the hotel across the street.
By the time it was past ten, the place was buzzing with excitement. The hosts had arrived.
Hathaway spotted a line of luxury cars from the Blackwood family slowly rolling in, one of them driven by the butler from Blackwood Mansion.
As the Blackwood family got out of their cars, the reporters swarmed in so tightly that Hathaway could barely see anything.
She caught a glimpse of Edmund in a dark traditional jacket, surrounded by a crowd as he made his way into the hotel.
Jeremiah and Jessica were completely hidden from view, not a sliver of their faces showing
Not long after, Jeremiah’s friends started showing up one after another. A fleet of flashy, colorful sports cars roared in. pulling up in dramatic arcs in front of the hotel.
The engagement party was meant to be an intimate gathering. The hosts, the Blackwood and Kingsley families, plus Jeremiah’s close friends and Jessica’s cousin’s family. It wasn’t a big crowd.
Elaine practically bounced out of the hotel, bursting with excitement as she scanned the crowd for Lucas
Hathaway leaned quietly against the steering wheel, checking the time on her watch.
At half past eleven, Hathaway suddenly heard the distant wail of sirens, growing loader and closer by the second.
“They’re finally here. Hathaway thought.
A wave of indescribable tension gripped her, making her breath catch
From her car, Hathaway watched as five police cruisers rolled up, making a statement.
Hathaway kurw they were only here for Preston, but the way they called in made it obvintis: the cops wesn’t showing the Blackwood family any risperi ronight.

Chapter 123
The police cars stopped right in front of the hotel, and a handful of uniformed officers stepped out. Before they could get far, hotel security moved in to block their path, leaving both sides stuck in a tense face–off at the entrance,
The security guards were busy calling someone, but as soon as the cops flashed their badges and paperwork they pushed right past and marched straight into the lobby.
Hathaway was dying to sneak into the crowd and see what was happening, but she forced herself to stay put
Thirty minutes later, Hathaway spotted Preston coming out from a distance.
His wrists were cuffed in cold steel, flanked by two officers.
Preston looked broken and lost.
The whole place erupted in chaos.
The reporters, who’d been waiting to snag exclusive shots of the Blackwood engagement, never imagined they’d end up catching Jeremiah’s future father–in–law sporting a pair of shiny handcuffs.
They went absolutely nuts, shoving forward as their cameras fired off nonstop.
Hathaway couldn’t see Preston’s face clearly, but she spotted Melanie stumbling after him, calling out desperately.
Watching the whole scene from a distance, Hathaway couldn’t help but smirk.
But not a single member of the Blackwood family came out. Not Jessica showed up.
Are they too embarrassed to show their faces? Hathaway wondered.
Just then, Hathaway’s phone suddenly buzzed, Evelyn’s name flashing on the screen.
Hathaway jumped, quickly swiping to answer.
“Where are you right now?” Evelyn’s voice was frantic and panicked.
Hathaway pretended not to know anything. “I’m outside. Is something wrong?”
Evelyn said, ‘Jeremiah and Jessica’s engagement party is a total mess Jessica’s dad got caught using cheap, low–quality materials in his products. Someone blew the whistle, and now it’s blown up way bigger thum anyone imagined.
“Edmund actually fainted on the spot.”
“What?” Hathaway blurted out.
She forgot she was still cramped in the car and shot up banging her head Jurf against the root with a ladd thud. Her eyes stung from the pain, but alte was too shocked to care.
“Is Edmund okay? Hathaway asked.

“He’s not dead, but… Evelyn’s voice trailed off
The next second, she sent over a video.
Hathaway’s vision went black for a moment. She quickly hung up, her fingers trembling as she tapped to open the video
In the video, the engagement party was thrown into chaos by the sudden arrival of the police
The festive music came to a screeching halt, and as soon as everyone realized the cops were after Preston, he and Melanie stood there, looking sharp but clearly terrified.
Edmund, the most senior member of the family, stood there with his face clouded and unreadable, quietly watching everything unfold. Disappointment was written all over his eyes.
Maybe this was the first time in his life he’d ever felt let down by Preston.
As Preston instinctively tried to dodge the police, he ended up bumping into Edmund as he backed away.
Jeremiah had been shielding Jessica, but when things went south, he reacted in a flash, reaching out to steady Edmund. Vivian rushed in from behind, literally becoming a human cushion to break his fall.
Even with their combined effort, Edmund still lost his balance and went down.
Jeremiah always kept Jessica close, never letting her out of his sight or protection.
When chaos erupted, Jeremiah suddenly let go of her and spun around to help Edmund. For a split second. he glanced back.
His glare was icy and ruthless, full of undisguised fury, aimed straight at whoever had stirred up all this trouble.
“Oh no, Hathaway muttered under her breath, panic creeping into her voice.
Sitting in her car, she felt like ice water was running through her veins. In a panic, she killed her phone, tossed it onto the passenger seat, and fired up the engine, desperate to get the hell out of there as fast as possible.
Back at the Whitmore residence, Hathaway headed straight to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of ice water.
Avery got home not long after.
As soon as they were home, the whole mess at the engagement party came up.
“Whoever’s behind this mess with the Kingsley family, we’re sitting back and reaping the rewards. Tomorrow’s going to be crazy. Big deals are about to drop out of nowhere Avery said, as his phone started blowing up with calls.
Avery’s grim grew wider as he picked up, but he quickly wiped the smile off his face and put out à terious fine, making sure no one could tell he was secredy enjoying the chass
He said, “Honestly, no one could’ve predicted things would turn it like this, it’s a real shock to everyone
