Chapter 23 Lucas’s Provocation

On the fifth day of the holiday, Hathaway contacted the HR manager, who told her that the person she was looking for hadn’ t applied yet.

Hathaway opened the recruitment app and posted high-paying job listings on major talent websites, offering annual salaries starting at 600 thousand dollars for algorithm engineers, mechanical engineers, and more.

She knew that both the Blackwood Group and the Harper Group were also recruiting different types of talent. Curiosity got the better of her, so she clicked on their job postings and saw that, on the surface, Whitmore Group was offering much higher salaries than Blackwood Tech.

But in reality, Hathaway knew Jeremiah was someone who truly valued talent. In her previous life, the chief engineer at Blackwood Tech, Killian, had an annual salary of over 3 million dollars.

Maybe Blackwood Tech didn’t want to attract people who only cared about money and would switch jobs for a higher paycheck, so they kept the salary figures in their ads deliberately low. This strategy actually worked pretty well.

Four hours later, the Whitmore Group’s inbox was flooded with job applications. Even though it was the holiday season, there were loads of applicants. But none of them was the one Hathaway was searching for.

Hathaway stayed up late, combing through every single application until the dead of night.

She was only looking for technical talent, but most of the applications were from people with completely unrelated backgrounds.

Then, she spotted a familiar name in her inbox. It was Marcus Ellington, who had once been fired from the Blackwood Group. She couldn’t help but smile. Marcus was quite a character.

He used to handle overseas server maintenance, and one time, he sent a client a file clearly labeled as obsolete.

The client, not knowing any better, changed their entire project strategy because of it, which left the Blackwood Group scrambling and put a project they’d been preparing for ages at a serious disadvantage.

Back then, Hathaway was already married to Jeremiah and expecting a child. Maybe it was the hormones, but when he was cold and distant, she couldn’t help but want to be near him, craving his warmth.

Jeremiah took the call, barely keeping his temper in check. When he turned and saw Hathaway moving closer, their eyes locked, and she found herself holding her breath without realizing it.

After catching sight of her, he spoke icily into the phone, “Deal with it for now. I want the follow-up plan on my desk by tomorrow morning.”

He hung up, his eyes lingering on Hathaway’s rounding belly. “So you’re still not going to tell me who the father is, huh?” Thinking back on all that, Hathaway sent Marcus a detailed and courteous email, tactfully suggesting that the Blackwood Group was in need of a versatile professional like him.

Two days later, Evelyn returned, and Hathaway went to pick her up at the airport.

Evelyn came back alone, clearly annoyed.

Sure enough, as soon as they met, Evelyn started complaining that her blind date didn’t work out, grumbling the whole way in the car.

“Didn’t you like him?” Hathaway asked.

Evelyn huffed, “He was way too stiff. I’d rather look for a boyfriend by myself.”

But honestly, the guys she chose were worse than the ones her parents introduced. They all had some agenda and were using her.

Hathaway said, “Why not give him a chance first? You can always decide after you get to know him a bit.”

“Hathaway, I thought you’d take my side,” Evelyn shot back. The next second, her stomach let out a loud growl.

“Have you eaten yet?” Hathaway asked.

Evelyn couldn’t stay mad. “Airplane food is the worst.”

Hathaway had already eaten, so she ordered a few dishes for Evelyn.

When the food arrived, Evelyn took a bite and was genuinely surprised. “Hathaway, how did you know about this place? It’s so good.”

Hathaway picked up a shrimp and placed it on Evelyn’s plate. “Have some more, then.”

“Hathaway, you should eat, too,” Evelyn said.

“Yeah.” Hathaway had already eaten before coming to pick Evelyn up. She took a small bite of the shrimp ball, more for show than anything else.

Evelyn glanced up at Hathaway. “Hathaway, I don’t know why, but you seem a lot gentler these days. You’re way more patient than you used to be.”

Evelyn was actually pretty happy to see Hathaway changing like this.

Hathaway smiled and didn’t say anything.
