Chapter 25 His Ride

Chapter 25 His Ride

V50 Voucty

Everyone at the office was on edge that day. Hathaway made her way to her office, turned on her computer, and started checking her emails.

When it was time to clock out, Hathaway turned to Avery and said, “Avery, I want to go pick Dad and Mom up at the airport.” Avery gave a wry smile. “You trying to get yourself slapped? Or do you want to end up on the news at the airport?”

As the head of one of Bayridge’s most influential families, Conrad, chairman of Whitmore Group, was always attending economic forums. Avery, too, was often in the media spotlight.

“Would Dad really do that to me?” Hathaway clutched his hand, suddenly feeling a wave of fear. Conrad had never slapped her. She wasn’t afraid of a slap, but she hated to upset her father.

“Hard to say.” Avery Conrad wouldn’t hit Hathaway, but he’d probably take it out on him. “Let’s head home first.”

Avery grabbed his trench coat from the armrest, but right then, the butler called to say the house was crawling with relatives, some distant ones he couldn’t name.

Avery hung up, sighed, and set his coat back down. “We’ll head out later.”

Hathaway and Avery ordered takeout at the office and didn’t head home until eight. By their estimate, Conrad’s flight should be landing soon.

When they finally got home, there was barely any space left to park. The yard and driveway were packed with cars they didn’ t recognize.

Avery rubbed his ear, resigned. “Maybe you should wait in the car?”

“No.” Hathaway refused, clutching his hand tighter.

The butler was already out picking up Conrad and Sylvia.

The living room was packed with people, and Mary was busy refilling everyone’s water glasses. As soon as Avery and Hathaway walked in, the crowd of people demanding answers swarmed them, all shouting at once.

“Hathaway, how could your dad, who’s always so kind, end up with a daughter as cold-hearted as you?”

“Heartless capitalist.”

“Whitmore Group got big, but you guys forgot who helped you out in the first place. How could you be so ungrateful?”

Then, the seventy-year-old mother of the finance manager, Cordelia, stormed over and grabbed Hathaway’s arm. “We gave you respect, and you go and fire my daughter? Put her back in her job, right now.”

She barked, “Or else I’ll go straight to Conrad and make sure you won’t hear the end of it. You might not know me, but your mom used to respect me very much when she was little.”

The old lady’s grip was surprisingly strong, and Hathaway gritted her teeth, biting back the pain.

“If you dare lay a hand on me, I’ll make sure you rot in jail.”

“We’re going to file for labor arbitration.”

“Go ahead and sue,” Hathaway said calmly. “I had perfectly valid reasons for letting them go.”

She pointed out helpfully, “But so you know, I heard the waitlist for labor arbitration is already two years long. If you really want to file a case, you’d better get in line early. Otherwise, you might not get a spot.”

Everyone was itching to take a swing at Hathaway after what she said.

Cordelia’s mom was so furious that her chest heaved and her face turned bright red. She threw herself onto the floor, crying and shouting, “Why did you fire Cordelia? If you don’t give us an explanation today, I’ll die right here.”

Someone hurried over to pat her back. Things got messy for a moment.

Avery was worried things were spiraling, and it might mess Hathaway up. “Why don’t you head upstairs for now?”

Just then, someone started recording Hathaway on their phone.

As Hathaway was about to go upstairs, someone stepped right in front of her, blocking her path.

It was a distant uncle from Sylvia’s side. He sneered, “Looks like this mess is all your doing, Hathaway. You make trouble, and now you want to run away?”

“If you’ve got a problem with my sister, take it u

He turned to Hathaway, his tone serious. “Go check the balcony and see if Dad’s car is here yet.”

“Don’t think about going upstairs. My mom says this is all your fault. Ever since you showed up at the company, it’s bee nothing but trouble.” Cordelia’s daughter, Lucia Blackwell, a college student and minor internet influencer, shouted.

In Hathaway’s previous life, when the Whitmore family went down, she cashed in by livestreaming all the dirt she could find on Whitmore Group, raking in followers and views.

Right now, she was shoving her phone right in Hathaway’s face, livestreaming to her audience. “Hey, everyone, check this out. This is how Hathaway treats the loyal old employees at Whitmore Group.

“She got here and started laying people off left and right. Not only did she fire people who’ve been with the company for years, but she’s also out here smearing their names.

“My mom worked at Whitmore Group for fifteen years, and they kicked her out like she was nothing. How can someone be so heartless?”

Lucia was somewhat well-known. As soon as she went live, thousands of viewers flooded into the stream.

As soon as Hathaway saw the phone pointed at her, she reflexively shielded her face.

Lucia, seeing Hathaway flinch, got more hyped and pressed the phone practically in her face. “Hey, everyone, when Whitmore Group was founded, they promised it was for everyone. But now, they’re firing them.
