The office door was knocked on gently, and Avery walked in. He had returned from the factory and heard about what happened to Elaine, so he closed the door behind him. “I heard about what happened just now.”
He walked over to Hathaway’s desk. “Hathaway, you’re my sister, and I shouldn’t meddle in your personal life. But look at the situation now.
“You need to find someone better than Jeremiah. I mean, I know that’s not exactly easy, but I have to tease you about it ever now and then. Someone as amazing as you. Are you seriously telling me no one’s after you?”
Avery unscrewed his thermos, having heard the rumors. “I heard Calvin gave you a ride home the other day. What do you think of him?”
“No way,” Hathaway shook her head. “He’s got a thing for married women.”
Avery was about to take a sip to steady himself, but ended up spitting out his water. He coughed twice and said, “I didn’t see that coming.”
“It’s fine. I actually have this online friend who turned into a real-life buddy, and who knows, maybe he’ll end up as my husband someday. If he ever joins Whitmore Group, I’ll make sure you meet him,” she joked.
Hathaway flashed Avery a smile, then buried herself back in her work.
Avery was stunned for a second, then nodded. “You really know what you want. Looks like I don’t need to worry about anymore.”

He glanced at Hathaway’s face, so calm and indifferent about everything, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that something
was off.
He was about to head out with his cup, but stopped at the door and turned back. “But do you like the guy?”
He couldn’t help but notice how much Hathaway had changed.
His little sister, who used to be so open with her feelings, now seemed unbothered by anything, as if she could take whatever life threw at her.
Hathaway looked up, her tone light, like she was talking about someone else’s business. “Isn’t marrying first and falling in love later the trend these days?
“Love is something you fuss over when you’re still in school. When you’re an adult, it’s all about whether you’re compatible or not. Avery, didn’t you and your wife also get married first and fall in love later?”
For someone who had survived death, love wasn’t something she yearned for anymore.
‘So what if you fall in love? In the end, it tears you apart and leaves nothing but dust, she thought.
Avery was taken aback by her words, then nodded.
This time, he really left.
Avery couldn’t help but feel that Hathaway was now so level-headed that it was hard to recognize her as his little sister.
It was like she had the soul of someone in their seventies or eighties trapped inside her twenty-something body.
Thinking about it made Avery shiver.
If she hadn’t been able to recall all those embarrassing childhood stories. Avery might’ve thought she’d been possessed by

Hathaway had considered two paths for her future: either spend her life alone, never getting married, or tie the knot with someone her parents approved of, to meet their expectations.
Honestly, the second option seems way more likely right now.
Conrad and Sylvia were always traditional; they’d never be the kind of parents who’d let her stay single.
After finishing her work, she uploaded a few travel pics to her social media, like she always did.
But her fan count still didn’t go up.

At noon, while Jessica was at home changing clothes, she got an international call from Monarcia.
Melanie was still fuming over the whole Seraphine Beauty incident, venting to her seventy-something mother about how scheming the Whitmore family was.
Jessica’s grandmother, Ruby Thome, called her about it. Since it was her favorite grandma, Jessica picked up right away, no matter how rushed she was to head out.
Ruby, a retired professor who was invited back to teach at a university in Monarcia, gave Jessica some heartfelt advice. “From now on, stick to your own path.
“Don’t give anyone a chance to trip you up or take you down. People can be tricky, and you never really know whose side they’re on. Be nice, but don’t trust people too quickly.
“And don’t let your soft heart make you give up what’s yours.”
“Got it, Grandma,” Jessica said, nodding. She always listened to her grandma.
After all this, Jessica had to admit she was still pretty much a rookie.
Compared to Jeremiah, with his sharp eye, quick decisions, and slick moves, she was still miles behind.
Ruby said, “It’s a good thing Jeremiah is helping you out. Make sure you really show your appreciation.”
When she heard Jessica was going to the university for her boyfriend’s lecture, she added, “Go ahead, young people should get out and experience more. And when you’re there, take a few photos for me.
“I want to see what kind of outstanding presence the guy Jessica keeps in her heart has up on that stage. Plus, he gave you so much money to get started, so remember to thank him properly.”
“Okay, Grandma,” Jessica said.
After hanging up, Melanie asked, “What did your grandma say?”
“She told me to make sure I thank Jeremiah properly. She thinks he’s someone I could really trust with my future,” Jessica replied.
Melanie, who knew all about Jeremiah’s good qualities, said, “Your grandma really cares about you!”
Jessica smiled and nodded.
Melanie still looked worried. “Your grandma said you should thank Jeremiah properly. So, how are you going to do that?”
Jessica really had no clue; anything she could give him, he already had.

“I’ll figure it out when the time comes,” Jessica replied as she headed out the door.

Melanie quickly grabbed her arm, realizing Jessica was totally missing the point. “Oh, you silly girl, thanking someone doesn’t have to be saying thank you.
“After a candlelit dinner, don’t you think you two need a little post-meal exercise? Some sweet couple time, getting a bit intimate, and then, well, things happen naturally.”
Jessica instantly caught on to what her mom was hinting at, her ears burning bright red. She mumbled, “Mom, people who give themselves too easily usually end up not being cherished.
“I know Jeremiah isn’t that kind of guy, but I’ve got my own way of handling things. Besides, I really don’t think Grandma meant it that way. Anyway, I’m heading out!”
Jessica had always believed that the restraint and self-awareness ingrained in her very being were a reflection of both her upbringing and her pride.
That sense of clarity had always been her anchor, never letting her bow her head for love or lose her composure in a relationship.
She and Hathaway were never cut from the same cloth.
She would never lose herself for love the way Hathaway did, or let anyone look down on her; she refused to end up being treated with contempt.
“Look at this silly girl, getting all shy,” Melanie said with a shake of her head.
Unable to convince Jessica, Melanie shrugged and let her go her own way.

At four o’clock on Friday afternoon, Hathaway walked into a quiet café with Lorenzo.
