Melanie’s face turned a deep shade of red. “Hathaway! because you can’t win Jeremiah’s heart doesn’t mean you should act like this”

Jessica coughed into her hand. “Mom, that’s enough!”

Mrs. Lockwood, the hostess, hurried over with a coat and quickly wrapped it around Jessica. “I’m so sorry, Ms. Kingsley Honestly, I never thought Ms. Whitmore would do something like this”

Jessica held up her hand to stop her. “It’s okay. don’t let Jeremiah find out about this I’m worried he might

Seeing Jessica stay so generous and thoughtful after being treated unfairly, Mrs. Lockwood’s look toward Hathaway was anything but friendly now.

“Someone, show her out,” Mrs. Lockwood ordered.

“Ms. Whitmore, please leave,” she added.

Hathaway watched as Jessica was protected by everyone around her, and she knew Jeremiah’s temperament all too well-he never let anyone who hurt Jessica off the hook, not if Jessica brought it upon herself.

“Ms. Whitmore, you’re not welcome here. If you don’t leave, I’ll call security,” Mrs. Lockwood said, her voice icy as she caught the unapologetic look in Hathaway’s eyes. “Please leave now.”

A waiter stepped in front of Hathaway, making a polite gesture for her to exit.

Hathaway set down her empty wine glass, without looking back at Jessica, and turned to leave.

The next day, Jeremiah didn’t make any move at all.

Seeing Jessica had been treated unfairly and Jeremiah hadn’t shown any reaction, Melanie instantly realized he still had no idea what had happened.

“Why didn’t you tell Jeremiah? Are you seriously going to let Hathaway get away with throwing wine at you?” Melanie pressed.

“He’s on a business trip. I don’t want to bother him,” Jessica said, her eyes flashing with pride. “Besides, I’m not the kind of person who runs to someone with every little problem.”

That sort of petty tattling? That’s totally Hathaway’s style,’ Jessica thought.

‘Let Jeremiah figure it out himself. If he doesn’t, I’m not about to go whining-makes me look weak,’ Jessica told herself.

Jessica wasn’t like most girls-she wasn’t the kind who needed someone else to fight her battles.

Jessica knew that was exactly the kind of thing Jeremiah respected about her.

Trying to teach Hathaway a lesson by lowering herself would only cost her the qualities she valued most-it wasn’t worth stooping that low.

Melanie probably figured that if Jeremiah heard about Jessica being wronged from someone else, it would make more of an impact.

She tidied Jessica’s clothes and said, “When Jeremiah gets back from his trip and finds out someone splashed wine on you, he’ll feel terrible for you.”

Chapter 97

Jessica smiled softly, grabbed a book, and sat down quietly.

Just then, a servant from the Kingsley family came in to announce that there were guests at the door.

It was Hadrian and Mrs. Lockwood, the hosts of yesterday’s party. According to the servant, they’d brought along a bunch of expensive health supplements, coming all the way over to apologize in person.

Jessica smiled, not surprised at all-she’d expected Hadrian and Mrs. Lockwood to show up. She and Melanie/went downstairs together, and sure enough, the Lockwoods were already waiting in the living room, looking all nervous and apologetic.

This time, they were here to make amends, acting extra humble-after all, Jessica was a guest they couldn’t afford to offend.

“Ms. Kingsley, Mrs. Kingsley” Hadrian greeted them.

“Mr. Lockwood, Mrs. Lockwood, what brings you here? Please, have a seat,” Jessica said.

“We’re so sorry, Ms. Kingsley. We should’ve taken better care of you yesterday. You were treated unfairly, and that’s on us,” Hadrian said.

Jessica sat with an air of elegance on the sofa, quietly listening to Hadrian and Mrs. Lockwood’s heartfelt apologies, wearing a poised smile with the right amount of warmth.

Once they finished, Jessica replied, “This was all Hathaway’s doing, so please don’t blame yourselves. If anyone owes an apology, it’s her-not you.”

Seeing how graceful, confident, and perceptive Jessica was, Hadrian and Mrs. Lockwood finally relaxed, their faces broke into relieved smiles, and they couldn’t stop offering polite compliments and pleasantries.

“Mr. Lockwood, Mrs. Lockwood, you’re too kind,” Jessica said, her gaze cool and composed.

Hadrian chatted with Preston about work for a while before saying his goodbyes to Preston, Jessica, and Melanie, then left.

The Kingsley family knew that all this fuss and courtesy was only because Jessica was Jeremiah’s girlfriend.

It was Jeremiah’s protection that made these high-society folks so eager to stay on her good side.

Preston, Melanie, and Elizabeth all found themselves thinking the same thing: ‘If only Jessica would hurry up and marry Jeremiah.

‘Even if it’s not a wedding right away, an engagement would be good enough, they all agreed.

After seeing the Lockwoods out, Melanie asked, “Jessica, has Jeremiah said anything about when you two are getting married?”

Jessica shook her head.

Even though Jeremiah hadn’t popped the question yet, the Kingsley family could already tell from how everyone treated them that things were pretty much set.

Even if Jeremiah hadn’t mentioned any plans for marriage, the Kingsleys had nothing to worry about.

Melanie grinned and said, “Once you two tie the knot, I’d love to see if that catty Hathaway still has the guts to act all smug!”

Jessica didn’t bother looking at Melanie’s annoyed face, comforted her, “Mom, don’t waste your energy on her. Hathaway’s

immature.”
