concrete mix. He quickly arranged several bags into a Inakeshift seat, then helped me lower myself onto it.

“Thank you,” I said grudgingly.

Kyle nodded, returning to his investigation of the space. I watched him move methodisally around the perimeter, checking behind tarps and examining walls for any sign of a exit.

“This is ridiculous,” I said after several minutes or silence. “How can there be no way out of this level?”

“There has to be,” Kyle replied, his voice echoing slightly. “Building code requires it.”

“Well, clearly someone didn’t follow code,” I retorted.

Kyle continued his search, disappearing behind a large tarp-covered structure. I shifted uncomfortably on my makeshift seat, trying to ease the pressure on my back. The twins were restless, perhaps sensing my anxiety.

“Find anything?” I called when Kyle didn’t return immediately.

“Not yet,” his voice drifted back. “But I’m still looking.”

I sighed, glancing at my watch. We’d been trapped for nearly twenty minutes now. Surely someone would notice soon. The hospital must have procedures for elevator malfunctions, especially in areas with patients.

Kyle reappeared, dust smudging his once-immaculate white shirt. Even disheveled, he managed to look unfairly handsome. It

was annoying.

“I found a door,” he announced, “but it’s locked from the other side. No keypad or card reader on this side.”

“Of course it is,” I muttered.

“Someone will find us,” Kyle said with that infuriating certainty he always projected. “My security team tracks my location. When they can’t reach me, they’ll start looking.”

I raised an eyebrow. “You still have a security team following you everywhere?”

“Not following,” he corrected. “Monitoring.”

The mention of Taylor made me scowl. “Speaking of Taylor, her bail hearing is tomorrow.”

Kyle’s expression darkened. “I’m aware.”

“How are you aware?” I asked, suddenly suspicious. “Are you still in contact with her?”

“No,” he said firmly. “But I make it my business to know when potential threats to my family are being evaluated for release.”

“Your family?” I repeated, unable to keep the edge from my voice. “That’s a interesting way to describe your ex-wife and unborn children you haven’t even met.”

Kyle’s jaw tightened, but his voice remained calm. “Regardless of our personal situation, Mia, you are carrying my sons. That makes you my family, whether you like it or not.”

I laughed, the sound harsh even to my own ears. “That’s rich, Kyle. Now I’m family?Have you asked me?”

The words hung in the air between us, sharp and painful. Kyle’s expression flickered with something that might have been remorse before settling back into careful neutralness.

“I’ve apologized for those mistakes,” he said quietly. “I know words aren’t enough, but they’re all I have to offer right now.”

“Your apologies don’t change what happened,” I said, suddenly tired of the conversation. “And they certainly don’t entitle you to call me ‘family’ now.”

Kyle didn’t respond immediately. He moved to the elevator doors, trying again to force them open, muscles straining beneath
