He glanced at his watch. “I should probably help your inother with lunch. The nurse will be arriving soon to check on the boys.”

Thomas’s confession had caught me completely off guard.

I wanted to say something but he left.

I sat in the rocking chair between their bassinets, gently moving back and forth.

It’s strange, I even wish Kyle could hear what Thomas just said. Kyle is such a big idiot. Why doesn’t he understand something so simple? Being around me, being around the kids, is more important than anything else.

I pulled out my phone and stared at Kyle’s number. For the hundredth time, I pressed call. For the hundredth time, it went straight to voicemail.

“This is Kyle Branson. Leave a message.”

His voice, so familiar yet suddenly strange, made my throat tighten.

“It’s me,” I said after the beep. “The boys came home today. They’re doing really well. Alexander weighs almost five pounds now. Ethan’s a little smaller, but the doctors are pleased with his progress.”

I paused, unsure what else to say.

“I thought you might want to know.” Another pause. “They look like you. Especially around the eyes.”

I ended the call, feeling foolish.

Alexander stirred slightly, his little face scrunching before relaxing again. Ethan remained perfectly still, his breathing so soft 1 found myself leaning closer to make sure he was okay.

The anger that had been simmering inside me for weeks bubbled to the surface. What kind of man abandons his premature twins? What kind of father misses their homecoming? What possible justification could Kyle have?

I’d spent six weeks making excuses for him. Maybe he was more seriously injured than they told me. Maybe he needed specialized treatment elsewhere. Maybe he was giving me space to recover without the stress of our complicated relationship.

But deep down, I knew I’m just fooling myself.

The image of Kyle bleeding in my arms flickered through my mind again.

I heard my mother’s voice in the hallway, speaking with Thomas about lunch arrangements. Their easy conversation drifted through the partially open door.

I looked back at my sons, so innocent, unaware of the chaos that had surrounded their entry into the world.

My phone felt heavy in my hand. I opened my contacts and hovered my finger over Kyle’s name. Delete contact.
