Chapter 7 Some Contracts
Mia’s POV
The hospital room was too quiet. Too white. Too empty.
Just like me now.
He looked perfect. Not a hair out of place. Like nothing had happened. Like our babies weren’t gone.
“You should rest,” he said, taking my phone from my hand and turning it off. He set it on the bedside table, as if I had just spoken nonsense.
“I meant what I said,” I told him.
“The doctor said you need rest,” he replied flatly, checking his phone.
“What I need,” I said, “is for you to sign the damn divorce papers.”
His hand froze over his phone.
“No.” Just one word. Cold and final. Like everything else about him.
“It wasn’t a question.” My voice sounded strange to my own ears. Empty, like my womb. “I’m ending the contract early.”
He moved closer. Looming over my hospital bed. His presence filled the room, suffocating. “You’re not thinking clearly. The medication-”
“Don’t tell me what I’m thinking.” The words came out sharper than I expected. “For once in your life, Kyle, just listen.”
His eyes narrowed. “You’re being hysterical.”
“Hysterical?” A laugh bubbled up. It sounded wrong. Everything sounded wrong now.
“Lower your voice.”
“Why? Afraid someone might hear? Might find out about your secret wife?”
“Mia.” Warning in his voice now. “You’re tired. We’ll discuss this when you’re more rational.”
“Rational.” The word tasted bitter. “Was it rational when you left me bleeding on the floor? When you carried her away while I was losing my children?”
Silence. His silence had always answered better than his words.
“That’s what I thought.” Everything felt hollow now. “Even now. Even now she’s the one you protect.”
“This isn’t about Taylor.”
“It was never about anything else.”
He started pacing. Five steps one way. Five steps back. Like a caged animal. “You’re my wife.”
“No.” The truth hurt less now. “I’m your employee who signed a paper. Your convenient arrangement.”
