“Dau’t psychoanalyze me.”
“Isn’t it?” I leaned forward slightly. “Would you be sitting here, claiming some deep connection, if you hadn’t realized who I was? If you still thought was just your convenient ex-wife?”
“That’s not fair.”
“No?” I laughed, but there was no humor in it. “Tell me something, Kyle. If Taylor walked through that door right now, pregnant with your child, what would you do? Would you fight this hard for those rights?”
His silence was answer enough.
“Exactly.” I pushed my water glass away, suddenly nauseated. “This isn’t about the babies, not really. It’s about your guilt over not recognizing me.”
“You don’t know what this is about,” he said, his voice dropping dangerously low.
“No.” The word came out rough. “I exactly what this is. You don’t love me, Kyle. You don’t even know me.”
“And what about you?” His question caught me off guard. “When you fell in love with me, did you really know me?”
But my voice shook slightly. “I admit I loved you. Kyle. I was infatuated with you like an idiot. I saw all of you, Kyle. You just
never bothered to see me.”
He was quiet for a long moment. “I see you now.”
“Because you have to.” I blinked back sudden tears. “Because circumstances forced you to look. That’s not love, Kyle. That’s obligation.”
“You don’t get to tell me what I feel.”
“No? Then tell me this-if I hadn’t gotten pregnant that night, would you have ever looked closer? Would you have ever recognized the truth about me and Taylor and everything else?”
His silence spoke volumes.
“That’s what I thought.” I started to stand, but his hand shot out, catching my wrist.
“Let me try,” he said, his voice rough with emotion I’d never heard before. “Let me prove that I can be better.”
“Better?” I pulled my hand away. “You can’t even admit that your feelings are based on guilt and obligation rather than actual
love.”
“And you can’t admit that you’re using these babies to punish me for past mistakes.”
The accusation hit hard. “You think that’s what this is about? Punishment?”
“Isn’t it?” His eyes blazed.
“I never-”
Movement caught my eye. Nate standing in the café doorway. I hadn’t told him about meeting Kyle, but somehow, he’d known.
How did Nate know I was here? Did Mom tell him? He always seems to appear at just the right moment.
“This conversation is over.” I pushed myself up from the table, one hand automatically going to my lower back where the twins’
weight was starting to strain.
Kyle stood too, reaching for me, but Nate was suddenly there between us.
“Everything okay?” he asked quietly, his eyes never leaving Kyle.

Chapter 95 The Father
Mia’s POV
Morning brought a fresh wave of chaos. Scarlett arrived like a hurricane at 7 AM, somehow having convinced the police officer to let her in. She burst into my bedroom, still wearing what looked like resort clothes, her face bare of makeup and creased with
worry.
“Oh my god!” She flung herself onto my bed, barely missing Gas, who scrambled away with an indignant huff. “I almost had a heart attack when I saw the news! Are you okay? Let me see your ankle. Did they get that bitch in jail? I swear to god, Mia, if you ever keep something like this from me again-”
“Scarlett,” I managed, sitting up groggily. “Breathe.”
“Breathe? BREATHE?” She pulled back to glare at me. “My best friend almost gets murdered and you want me to breathe?”
“Yes, because you’re going to hyperventilate.” I grabbed her flailing hands. “I’m okay. Really. Just a sprained ankle and some bruises.”
She studied my face intently, as if looking for hidden damage. Finally, her shoulders slumped. “I was so scared,” she whispered, uncharacteristically vulnerable. “When I saw that footage, I swear I will—”
“Footage?” My stomach dropped. “What footage?”
“It’s everywhere, Mia. Security cameras caught the whole thing-Taylor’s car heading straight for you, you diving out of the way…” She swallowed hard. “And then afterward, when you confronted her. It’s gone viral.”
I closed my eyes briefly. “Great.”
“Actually, people are calling you a badass. Pregnant woman dodges car, then confronts her attacker? It’s like something from a movie.” Scarlett squeezed my hand. “Though the pregnancy revelation has everyone talking. Kyle’s trending on social media.”
“Perfect.” I sank back against my pillows. “Just what I needed.”
She chewed her lip nervously. “Has he reached out?”
I nodded. “Last night. Wants to talk today.”
“And?”
“And I have no idea what to say to him.” I glanced at my bedside clock-7:15 AM. “But I have a few hours to figure it out.”
“Not really.” She grimaced apologetically. “Morton’s been on the phone with their family lawyer all morning. Apparently Kyle’s been trying to track you down since last night. Almost went to the police station before someone convinced him to wait.”
Oh, whoa.
By the time I’d showered and dressed-a challenge with my injured ankle-Mom had prepared breakfast with Scarlett’s help. The kitchen smelled like comfort: fresh coffee, scrambled eggs, toast with the blackberry jam I’d been craving lately.
“You look better,” Mom said, helping me into a chair. “Did you get any sleep?”
“Some.” I accepted the coffee Scarlett handed me-decaf, I noted with a mixture of irritation and gratitude. “Thanks for this. Both of you.”
Scarlett waved dismissively. “What’s a maid of honor for if not emergency breakfast preparation?” She paused, eyeing me critically. “Though we really need to discuss your post-shower fashion choices. Leggings and an oversized sweater for confronting your billionaire ex? Really?”
“I’m five months pregnant with twins and have a sprained ankle,” I reminded her. “Comfort trumps style today.”
Chapter 5 The Father
“At least let me do something with your hair. And maybe some mascara? You look a little zombie-ish around the eyes.”
“Gee, thanks.”

“I’m just saying-”
A sharp knock at the door interrupted her. Gas sprang to attention, ears forward, tail stiff. Mom and 3carlett exchanged glances.
“That can’t be Kyle already,” I said, checking the time. “It’s only been twenty minutes.”
Scarlett peeked through the peephole, then relaxed. “It’s Nate.”
