The New Order

At the mansion, Alina had barely slept. The tears had eventually stopped sometime around three AM, leaving her hollow and exhausted, staring at the ceiling until pale light began filtering through the curtains.

She heard footsteps in the corridor around seven. Expected Mrs. Helen’s familiar knock.

Instead, a timid tap. Too light. Too hesitant.

Come in,Alina said, her voice rough from crying.

The door opened to reveal one of the younger maids. Sarah, maybe. Or Julia. Alina had never been good with the junior staff namesthey rotated so frequently.

The girl carried a breakfast tray with both hands, eyes down, movements careful.

Good morning, Ma’am,she said quietly, setting the tray on the desk without looking up.

Where’s Mrs. Helen?Alina asked.

The girl flinched slightly. Mrs. Helen has been reassigned to other areas of the house, Ma’am. I’ll be attending to your meals from now on.

Reassigned.Alina repeated the word flatly. By whose order?

Mr. Blackwood’s, Ma’am.Still not meeting her eyes. Is there anything else you need?

Yes. I need you to get Mrs. Helen.

I’m sorry, Ma’am. I don’t have authorization to do it.

Then get Mr. Harris.

“Ma’am-

GET SOMEONE!Alina’s voice cracked. I need to speak to someone who can make decisions. Now.

The girl practically ran from the room.

The door closed.

Locked again from the outside.

Alina stared at the breakfast tray. Toast. Eggs, Tea that she wouldn’t drink because the last time someone gave her tea in this house, she’d woken up four hours later while Junior was bleeding.

She pushed the tray away.

Reached for her phone instead.

The one Daniel had returned. The one he’d said she could use but would be monitored.

She pulled up Emma’s contact. Pressed call.

The phone rang once. Twice. Then nothing.

Call failed.

She tried again.

Same result.

She checked the signal bars. Full strength. But somehow the call wouldn’t connect.

She tried Rachel’s number. The office line for the women’s health clinic.

Call failed.

Again and again.

Every number she tried met the same fate. The call would attempt to connect, then drop.

Realization settled cold in her stomach.

They weren’t just monitoring her calls.

They were blocking them.

Signal jammer. Probably installed right outside her room. Close enough to interfere with outgoing calls but not close enough to look suspicious if anyone checked the phone itself.

She was completely cut off.

No Mrs. Helen. No outside contact. No way to reach anyone who might help.

Alina set the phone down carefully, hands shaking.

She thought about screaming. About throwing things. About breaking the window and climbing out onto the ledge just to prove she still had some autonomy over her own body and choices.

But what would that accomplish except giving them justification to call her unstable?

She sat on the edge of the bed instead, hands folded in her lap, and waited.

An hour passed.

Two.

At nine thirty, she heard the lock turn.

The door opened.

Daniel stood in the doorway, still in his suit from last night, tie loosened, face showing the exhaustion of someone who hadn’t slept at all.

Alina was on her feet immediately.

How is he?Aliana approached Daniel and asked without preamble. She looked worried. How is Junior?

Daniel stepped into the room, closing the door behind him but not locking it.

He’s stable. Physically recovering well.

I heard he has amnesia?Alina’s voice trembled. Is it true? Did he really lose his memory?

Daniel’s jaw tightened. Yes.

The word landed like a physical blow.

How bad is it?Alina whispered. How much did he forget?

He has forgotten most of his memories from the past two to three years.Daniel’s voice was flat. Clinical. Like he was reporting on a business deal gone wrong. He remembers his name. His age. Me. My mother. But specific events, routines, people who entered his life recentlythose are mostly gone.

Alina’s legs felt weak. She sat back down on the bed, hands gripping the edge.

Does he remember me at all?

Daniel hesitated. That hesitation told her everything before he spoke.

When the doctor asked him about you by name, he recognized it. But no details. There are no memories of the time you spent together.

Alina made a sound. Small. Broken.

He asked about a mamawho should be there,Daniel continued quietly. A feeling of someone missing. But he couldn’t attach a face or specific memories to it.

And you told him what?Alina looked up, tears already streaming. What did you tell him about me?

I didn’t tell him anything. I wasn’t in the room when-Daniel caught himself. “The doctor handled the initial assessment.

But Clarissa was there. Not a question. A certainty.

Daniel didn’t deny it.

Alina covered her face with her hands, shoulders shaking with sobs she couldn’t control anymore.

He forgot me,she whispered through her fingers. Five years. Five years of loving him and he forgot me.

The doctor said it might be temporary-

MIGHT BE!Alina’s head snapped up. Might be temporary! What if it’s not? What if he never remembers? What if I’m justgone from his life like I never existed?

Daniel stood there, hands in his pockets, looking anywhere but at her face.

The brain is resilient, especially in children. Dr. Emily said there’s good chance memories will return over time-

How much time?Alina demanded. Weeks? Months? Years? How long do I wait while my son thinks I’m a stranger?

He’s not your son.

The words came out automatic. Reflexive.

And immediately, Daniel knew he’d made a mistake.

Alina went very still.

Get out,she said quietly.

Alina-

GET OUT!

Daniel took a step back. I didn’t mean-

Yes, you did.Alina stood, voice shaking with rage. You meant it. You’ve always meant it. I’m not his real mother. I’m just the help who got too attached. Who forgot her place.

That’s not-

I want to see him.Alina’s voice cut through. I want to see Junior. Today. Now.

That’s not possible.

WHY NOT?

Because he’s confused and disoriented and introducing someone he doesn’t remember in his current state would cause unnecessary stress-

I’m not someone!Alina was shouting now. I’m his MOTHER! I raised him! I was there for every nightmare, every fever, every scraped knee! I earned the right to be there when he’s scared and hurt!

And that’s exactly why you can’t be there right now.Daniel’s voice rose to match hers. Because you’re emotional and desperate and you’ll overwhelm him trying to force memories that might not come back!

The silence that followed was deafening.

Alina stared at him.

You’re not protecting him,she said slowly. You’re protecting her. You’re giving Clarissa time to rewrite everything? Tell him her version of who I was?

Daniel’s expression flickered. Just for a second.

That flicker told Alina everything.

Oh my God,she breathed. That’s exactly what you’re doing.

Junior needs stability-

Junior needs his MOTHER!

He has his mother! His biological mother is there with him right now, and she’s been nothing but attentive and caring-

She DRUGGED me!Alina screamed. She destroyed his toy and framed me for it! She’s manipulative and dangerous and you’re letting her have unsupervised access to a confused fiveyearold while keeping me locked in this room like a prisoner!

You have no proof she drugged you-

Then TEST THE CUP! Mrs. Helen saved it! Test it and prove I’m lying!

I’m not going to-

Because you’re afraid of what you’ll find.Alina’s voice dropped. You’re afraid I’m right. That you brought a dangerous woman into this house and gave her everything while treating the person who actually loved your son like garbage.

Daniel’s hands clenched into fists at his sides.

Junior is being discharged tomorrow,he said, voice tight with control. “He’ll come home. He’ll need time to adjust. To heal.

I want to see him when he comes home.

That’s not-

Daniel, please. The fight went out of Alina’s voice, replaced by raw desperation. Please. I’m begging you. Let me see him. Even just for a few minutes. Just so I know he’s okay. Just so he knows I’m here.

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

There will be rules,he said finally.
