The assistant left.
Daniel sat alone in his office, hands pressed together, staring at nothing,
Richard. Emma. A family lawyer.
The pieces were forming a picture he didn’t like.
They were going to try to take Alina away.
File for divorce on her behalf. Claim she was being held against her will. Paint Daniel as an abuser or a jailer.
And the worst part?
They weren’t entirely wrong.
Daniel had refused to let Alina leave. Had kept her in the house despite her requests for freedom. Had allowed his mother to control and isolate her.
A good lawyer could make that look very bad.
Could turn public opinion against the Blackwood family.
Could destroy the company’s reputation.
Daniel picked up his phone.

Called his head of legal.

“We may have a situation developing. I need our best family law attorney on standby. And I need you to prepare a defense strategy for potential allegations of domestic control or unlawful detention.”
“Sir, has something happened?”
“Not yet. But it’s coming. And I want us ready when it does.”
He ended the call.
Sat in the growing darkness of his office.
And realized with sickening clarity that he might lose Alina anyway.
Not because she left.
But because her family and friends forced the issue legally.
Took the choice out of both their hands.

Evening approached.
A maid knocked on Alina’s door. “Mrs. Blackwood? Mrs. Margaret requests you join the family for dinner.”
Alina closed her journal. Locked it in the drawer with the same careful positioning as before.
Let them think she didn’t know it had been moved.
“I’ll be down in five minutes.”
She checked her appearance. Fixed her hair. Applied fresh lipstick.
The mask firmly in place.
Then she left the room.
Mr. Harris stood in the corridor. Straightened when he saw her.
“Mrs. Blackwood.” His voice was stiff. Formal.
“Mr. Harris.”
Their eyes met briefly.
Guilt flickered in his. Just for a second.
Then professional blankness returned.
But Alina saw it.
Mr. Harris had been involved in the journal theft.
Had entered her room. Taken it. Returned it.
On Margaret’s orders, certainly.
The man was just following instructions. Protecting his job. His family.

Alina understood that.
But understanding didn’t mean forgiving.
She walked past him without another word.
Down the corridor toward the dining room.
Her steps slowed as she heard voices from the family room.
Junior’s voice. Bright. Excited.
“Look, Grandma! Mommy helped me draw mydream! See the dinosaur? And the spaceship?”
Margaret’s warm response. “That’s wonderful, darling. You’re so talented.”
“Mommy is the best drawer ever! She showed me how to make the scales look real!”
Clarissa’s laugh. Gentle. Affectionate. “You did most of it yourself, sweetheart. I just helped a little.”
“No, Mama is the best! Mama is the most amazing person in the whole world!”
The words hit Alina like physical blows.
“Mama is the best.”
‘Most amazing person in the whole world.‘
