Final Walls
Emma arrived at Rachel’s office breathless.
She had nearly run from the parking lot. Pushing past Sarah, who tried to stop her with an anxious expression.
“Emma, Mrs. Chen is-”
“I know she’s in there. Let me through, Sarah.”
Emma opened the door to Rachel’s office without knocking.
Rachel was still seated in her chair. Her face wet with tears. Her eyes red and swollen. Her hands trembling on the
desk.
“Rachel,” Emma called as she closed the door behind her. “What happened? What did Daniel do to you?”
Rachel lifted her head. She looked at Emma with eyes full of remorse.
“Emma, I… I can no longer take on Alina’s case. I’m sorry, I have to withdraw.”
“Why? Tell me.”
Rachel drew a long, shaking breath. Then she told Emma everything.
About Daniel arriving without warning. About the threat to Sheila and her scholarship at Stanford. About David’s past that could be reopened and used to destroy his career.
About the phone call from a panicked Sheila over the sudden evaluation.
About how Daniel had made the threat real within minutes, demonstrating exactly how far his reach extended.
Emma listened with a face that grew paler by the second.
“So he threatened your daughter,” Emma whispered. “And you had no choice.”
“I’m sorry, Emma.” Rachel wept again. “I can’t gamble with Sheila’s future. She has worked so hard for three years. She has sacrificed so much. I can’t let all of that collapse because I tried to help this case.”
Rachel looked at Emma with eyes full of appeal.
“And David… he has already suffered enough from that old case. His reputation has already been damaged. If Daniel reopens the investigation, if David loses his license, it will destroy him. I simply cannot allow that.”
Emma sat down in the chair across from the desk. She looked at Rachel with an expression caught between disappointment and understanding.
“I understand,” she said quietly. “I can’t blame you, Rachel. If I were in your position, I might do the same thing.”
“I despise myself for this!” Rachel struck the desk weakly. “I’m a lawyer who is supposed to protect victims. Supposed to stand against people like Daniel Blackwood. But I’m too much of a coward. I’m afraid of losing my family. I am truly sorry.”
Emma reached out. She touched Rachel’s trembling hand.
“You are not a coward. You are a mother protecting her child. There is nothing wrong with that.”
Rachel shook her head as the tears kept falling.

“But Alina needs help. And I’m abandoning her.”

“This is not your fault,” Emma said firmly. “This is all Daniel’s doing. He is the one using his power and money to destroy anyone who tries to stand against him.”
Rachel looked at Emma with guilt-filled eyes.
“Forgive me, Emma. Forgive me for not being able to keep fighting. For not being as strong as I thought I was.”
Emma stood. She walked around the desk and pulled Rachel into an embrace.
“It’s all right. You did your best. Now protect your family. That is what matters most.”
They both wept in that embrace.
Feeling the bitterness of a defeat that left no room for argument.
Emma left Rachel’s office with heavy steps.
She got into her car and sat in the driver’s seat without starting the engine.
She stared out the window with vacant eyes.
Then she picked up her phone. She called Richard.
“Emma?” Richard’s voice came through. “How is Rachel? What happened?”
“Daniel threatened her family,” Emma answered in a flat voice. “Her daughter who is studying at Stanford. Her husband who has a troubled past. Daniel can destroy them both at any time. And Rachel had no choice but to
withdraw.”
Silence on the other end.
“Uncle Richard,” Emma continued in a trembling voice. “Rachel can no longer help us. But we still have to keep fighting for Alina.”
“I understand,” Richard said at last, his voice exhausted. “Daniel is not bluffing. He will destroy anyone who stands in his way.”
“I’m sorry for not being able to convince Rachel to hold on,” Emma said with a guilty tone.
“This is not your fault, Emma. You have nothing to apologize for.” Richard drew a long breath. “Thank you for not giving up. Thank you for still being willing to fight for Alina even when we have no weapons left.”
“I will always fight for Alina,” Emma said with conviction. “She is my best friend. I will not leave her.”
“I’ll contact you as soon as Daniel allows me to speak with Alina,” Richard promised. “That is our only opportunity now. The only way to know her real condition.”
“All right. I’ll wait to hear from you.”
They ended the call.
Emma threw her phone onto the passenger seat.
“DAMN HIM!” she screamed into the empty car. “DAMN YOU, DANIEL BLACKWOOD!”

She struck the steering wheel with both hands. Repeatedly. Until her hands ached.

“One day you will regret everything you have done to Alina! I swear I will find a lawyer who is competent and courageous enough to face you! I will find someone you cannot threaten! Someone you cannot destroy with your power!”
Emma rested her forehead against the steering wheel. Her breath was ragged.
But her eyes were full of a determination that had not dimmed.
She would not give up.
No matter how heavy the burden.
She would keep fighting for Alina.
In the penthouse, Margaret sat on the sofa with a glass of wine in hand
A laptop screen was open on the coffee table. Displaying the CCTV feed from Alina’s room.
The woman had been sitting in the same position for the several dozen minutes Margaret had been watching.
Alina did not move. Did not eat. Did nothing at all.
Margaret smiled thinly at the sight of Alina’s increasingly broken state.
But the smile quickly shifted into a furrowed brow.
Because Daniel visited that room far too often. Was far too attentive toward a woman who should have been forgotten by now.
And what worried Margaret most was the pregnancy news.
If Alina truly became pregnant, if she truly gave birth to Daniel’s child, then Junior’s position as sole heir would be threatened.
And Margaret could not allow that to happen.
She had to act quickly. Before it was too late.
Margaret picked up her phone. She searched for a contact she had not reached out to in a long time.
Dr. Lawrence Mitchell. The psychiatrist she had once summoned to evaluate Alina.
The psychiatrist Daniel had expelled several weeks ago.
The line rang several times before being answered.
“Mrs. Blackwood?” Dr. Mitchell’s voice sounded surprised. “This is unexpected. What can I do for you?”
“Dr. Mitchell, I need your help again,” said Margaret in an urgent tone. “Regarding Alina.”
“Mrs. Blackwood, with all due respect, I cannot involve myself in that case again. Mr. Daniel was very clear in forbidding me from approaching your family.”
“I know. But the situation has changed. Alina is becoming increasingly unstable. She needs professional help. She needs care at a proper facility.”

Dr. Mitchell paused for a moment. “You mean you want me to help have Alina admitted to a psychiatric institution?”
“Yes,” Margaret answered firmly. “I want you to find a legal way to do it. A psychiatric evaluation. A proper diagnosis. A recommendation for intensive care. Whatever is required.”
“Mrs. Blackwood, that would be extremely difficult. Especially if Mr. Daniel does not agree. He is her lawful husband. He has full authority to refuse any form of treatment.”
“Then find a way to do it without Daniel’s consent,” Margaret pressed. “You are an experienced psychiatrist. There must be a way. An emergency hold. Danger to self or others. Anything.”
“That would be very risky-”
“I will pay you twice your last f*e,” Margaret cut in. “Three times if necessary. Money is not an issue. What matters is that Alina must be removed from this house before she truly becomes pregnant and gives birth to Daniel’s child.”
Dr. Mitchell went quiet for a longer stretch this time.
Margaret could hear his heavy breathing on the other end.
“I… I don’t know, Mrs. Blackwood. This is very dangerous. If Mr. Daniel finds out, he could destroy my career. He could report me to the medical board. I could lose my license.”
Margaret smiled coldly. She played her trump card.
“Dr. Mitchell, I know about the malpractice case from five years ago. The patient who took their own life after you misdiagnosed them and prescribed the wrong medication. The case that was resolved with a settlement and buried very quietly.”
Dr. Mitchell could be heard swallowing hard. “How did you-”
“I have connections, Dr. Mitchell. And I have a complete set of documents about that case. Including evidence that was never brought to court because the patient’s family agreed to settle.”
A suffocating silence.
“If you do not help me,” Margaret continued in a dangerous tone. “I will make certain those documents reach the medical board. The press. Everyone who needs to know about the negligence that contributed to a young patient’s death.”
“That… that is blackmail,” Dr. Mitchell whispered in a shaking voice.
“That is an incentive,” Margaret corrected. “To ensure you do the right thing. Alina needs help. And you are the one who can provide it.”
Dr. Mitchell was silent for a long time. A very long time.
Margaret waited with patience. She sipped her wine with ease.
Knowing she had already won.
“Very well,” Dr. Mitchell said at last in a defeated voice. “I’ll do it. I’ll find a way to evaluate Alina and provide a recommendation for intensive care at a psychiatric facility.”
Margaret smiled broadly. Full of satisfaction.

“Good. I will arrange access to Alina without Daniel’s knowledge. Be ready to act within the next few days.”
“Understood, Mrs. Blackwood.”
Margaret ended the call with a feeling of deep satisfaction.
She looked at the laptop screen, which still showed Alina sitting in a daze on the bed.
“Enjoy your time in this house, Alina,” Margaret whispered with a cruel smile. “Because soon you will be moved somewhere more… suitable. A place where someone as unhinged as you truly belongs.”
Meanwhile, Daniel’s car passed through the mansion gates as dusk began to fall.
He stepped out with light steps. The thin smile still on his lips.
Today had been highly productive.
Richard Hayes had been subdued. Rachel Chen had been forced to withdraw. Every threat to his marriage with Alina had been neutralized.
Now he could focus on his primary objective.
Making Alina truly pregnant.
Binding her with a biological chain that could never be severed.
Daniel entered the mansion without acknowledging the servants who bowed He went straight up the stairs to the upper floor.
Toward Alina’s room.
Daniel did not even ask about Junior. Did not care where Clarissa was or what was happening in other parts of the house.
He was focused on only one thing. Alina.
The corridor leading to Alina’s room was quiet as always.
Daniel saw Mrs. Helen and Mr. Harris standing at the door. Both of their faces were tense.
“Sir,” Mr. Harris greeted with a bow.
“Has Alina eaten?” Daniel asked directly without preamble.
Mrs. Helen lowered her head. She shook it slowly.
“I tried to coax her, Sir. But Mrs. Alina has refused persistently. She has not eaten since this morning.”
Daniel’s jaw hardened.
“Open the door.”
Mr. Harris unlocked it immediately. The door swung open with a soft click.
Daniel entered with forceful steps.
Mrs. Helen and Mr. Harris remained outside. Waiting with anxiety.

Daniel saw Alina sitting on the edge of the bed. She was staring at the floor in a daze, her eyes empty.
His gaze moved to the lunch tray on the bedside table. Still untouched. Not a single thing had been taken from it.
“Why haven’t you eaten?” Daniel asked in a hard tone.
Alina did not answer. She did not even look up.
She only continued staring at the floor with a hollow expression.
Daniel moved closer. He sat on the edge of the bed beside Alina.
“Alina, you have to eat. This is not good for your health.”
No response.
Daniel drew a deep breath. Trying to hold back his anger.
“Please. Eat something. Even just a little. Your body needs nourishment.”
Alina remained still. As though Daniel did not exist.
Daniel felt fury beginning to simmer in his chest.
“Fine,” he said, his tone shifting to something cold. “If you won’t eat, then the person responsible for watching over you will bear the punishment.”
Alina still did not stir. No reaction whatsoever.
