As though she was too frightened to acknowledge that she was in danger.
As though someone was listening. Watching. Threatening.
Richard felt anger and fear collide in his chest.
Daniel Blackwood.
That man was surely there while Alina was on the phone.
Surely monitoring every word she said.
Surely had threatened Alina beforehand to prevent her from revealing her true condition.
Richard clenched his fists until his knuckles went white.
He had to act quickly.
Without wasting another moment, Richard picked up his phone and called Emma.
Emma answered on the third ring.
“Uncle Richard?” Her voice sounded exhausted. “Any news from Alina?”
“Emma, I just spoke with her,” Richard said quickly. “Daniel finally allowed Alina to call me.”
Emma immediately sat up from the sofa in her apartment. “What did she say? How is she?”
Richard told her everything.
About the way Alina confirmed the pregnancy in a forced tone.
About how she said she was “very happy” but sounded hollow.
About the nightmare code that went unanswered.
And most importantly, about the final words “everything is fine” spoken in the tone Richard recognized as a lie.
Emma listened with held breath.
“So Alina was trying to give a signal,” Emma whispered after Richard finished. “But she couldn’t do it openly because Daniel must have been right there.”
“Yes,” Richard answered in a trembling voice. “I’m certain she’s in serious danger, Emma. And I don’t know how to help her. Daniel has blocked every avenue. Even Rachel Chen has stepped down because of his threats.”
Emma felt fury surge in her chest.
“Uncle Richard,” she said in a voice full of hard determination. “I promise I will find a good lawyer. A lawyer who isn’t afraid of the Blackwood family. Especially that cursed Daniel.”
Richard felt tears fill his eyes.
“Thank you, Emma. Thank you for still being willing to fight for Alina. Thank you for not giving up.
“Alina is my best friend,” Emma said firmly. “I will never give up on her. And Uncle Richard, I need your help too. I’ll find the lawyer, but you have to be ready to take on Daniel and the Blackwood family.”
“I’ll do it,” Richard promised without hesitation. “Whatever it takes to bring Alina out of there. I’ll help look for a

lawyer for my daughter as well.”
They spoke for a few more minutes about strategy and possibilities.
Then they ended the call with renewed resolve.
After the call ended, Emma sat on the sofa with her mind racing.
How could they help Alina?
Rachel Chen had stepped back because of threats against her daughter and husband.
Other lawyers would likely face the same fate.
Daniel Blackwood had power and money that were nearly limitless.
He could threaten anyone. Destroy anyone who tried to stand against him.
Emma needed to find someone who could not be threatened.
Someone who had no weakness Daniel could exploit.
Or someone powerful enough to fight back.
Emma picked up her phone. She began contacting her acquaintances one by one.
A college friend who worked at a law firm.
A former supervisor with extensive connections in the legal industry.
Even a distant acquaintance who had once mentioned a formidable lawyer.
But each time Emma explained the situation – the Blackwood family, the powerful Daniel, a domestic violence case against a billionaire’s wife – they all backed away.
“I’m sorry Emma, I can’t get involved in something this big.”
“Blackwood? Emma, are you serious? No lawyer would go up against them.”
“I have a family, Emma. I can’t take a risk like that.”
One by one, they refused.
Emma was nearly at the end of her hope.
Nearly two hours had passed with calls and messages yielding nothing.
Until she called Jennifer, a high school friend who now worked as a paralegal at a large law firm.
“Emma!” Jennifer answered cheerfully. “Haven’t heard from you in ages! What’s going on?”
Emma summarized the situation briefly. About Alina. About Daniel. About the urgent need for a lawyer who was willing to take a stand.
Jennifer was quiet for a moment.
“Wow, that’s… that’s an incredibly difficult situation, Emma. I don’t think any of the lawyers at our firm would take on a case like that. Blackwood Enterprises is one of the potential clients we’re trying to bring in. Nobody wants to damage that relationship.”

Emma felt her hope beginning to flicker out again.
“But,” Jennifer continued in a thoughtful tone. “There might be one person who could help.”
Emma immediately straightened. “Who?”
“Do you remember someone from our year in high school? The one who was student council president?”
Emma furrowed her brow. “There were a lot of people in our year, Jen. Who do you mean?”
“Adrian. Adrian Lawson.”
Emma went still. The name sounded familiar but she couldn’t place it immediately.
“Adrian Lawson – tall, dark hair, liked basketball?” Emma asked, trying to remember.
“Yes! That’s him. Do you remember?”
Emma searched her memory. A vague figure emerged. A tall, quiet but sharp young man. Always sat in the front row. Rarely spoke but when he did, it always hit the mark.
“I remember a little,” Emma said. “But what does Adrian have to do with this?”
“Adrian is a prominent lawyer now,” Jennifer answered with a note of admiration. “He handles major cases. Human rights cases. Cases against massive corporations. Even some international cases. He has a reputation for being afraid of no one.”
Emma felt a spark of energy beginning to grow in her chest.
“Is he practicing here? Domestically?”
“Sometimes here, sometimes abroad. He has an office in New York and one here as well. But from what I’ve heard, he just won a major case against a giant pharmaceutical company. It made international news.”
Emma felt as though this might be their chance.
“Jennifer, do you have his contact? I have to speak with him.”
“Hold on,” Jennifer said. The sound of typing could be heard. “Okay, I’m sending you his office number in a message. But Emma, there’s something I need to tell you.”
“What is it?”
Jennifer paused for a moment. “Adrian… he used to have feelings for Alina. Back in high school. Everyone knew he liked her even though he never said it outright.”
Emma could barely believe what she was hearing.
“What? Seriously?”
“Yes. Some people even said he was going to confess to Alina at graduation but he didn’t go through with it because he thought Alina already had a boyfriend at the time. Though I remember – at that point Alina was just talking with your boyfriend.”
“Oh my God!”
Emma felt a mixture of hope and uncertainty.
“Who knows if he still remembers Alina or not. It’s been such a long time. But maybe he’d be willing to help.”

Emma went quiet.
Adrian Lawson.
A prominent lawyer who was unafraid of powerful corporations.
Who once had feelings for Alina.
Would he be willing to help?
Or would he refuse because whatever he once felt had long since disappeared?
“Thank you, Jennifer,” Emma said at last. “I’ll try to reach him.”
“Good luck, Emma. And… give Alina my regards if you see her.”
They ended the call.
Emma stared at the new message on her phone.
Adrian Lawson’s office number. His downtown address. And his email.
Emma drew a long breath.
This might be their last chance.
A lawyer Daniel could not threaten because he was already accustomed to fighting giants.
A lawyer who might still carry some feeling for Alina and would be motivated to help her.
Or perhaps it would be the opposite.
Perhaps those old feelings were long gone. Perhaps he didn’t even remember Alina.
But Emma had to try.
For Alina.
With trembling hands, Emma typed an email.

Subject: Urgent Legal Help Needed
Mr. Lawson,
My name is Emma Carter. We were classmates at Lincoln High.
I’m reaching out because my best friend desperately needs legal help. She’s trapped in an abusive marriage.
Every lawyer I’ve contacted has refused to take the case because they’re afraid of the family’s power and
connections.
But I’ve heard about your work- how you’re not afraid to fight powerful corporations. How you stand up for people who have no one else.
My friend needs someone like that. Someone who won’t back down.

Emma read the email through twice.
Then she drew a deep breath and pressed send.
The email went with a soft whoosh.
Emma stared at her phone screen with held breath.
Hoping. Praying.
That Adrian Lawson would read it.
Emma set her phone on the coffee table and leaned back against the sofa.
She closed her eyes for a moment.
“Hold on, Alina,” she whispered into the stillness. “I will do whatever it takes to help you get out of that wretched house.”

Obsession’s Grip
Night arrived with a suffocating darkness.
Alina sat on the edge of the bed with vacant eyes staring at the window barred with iron grates.
She knew Daniel would come. The man had made his promise that afternoon. Daniel’s words still echoed in her head like a curse.
The door opened with a soft click.
Daniel entered with unhurried steps. He closed and locked the door from the inside.
Alina did not turn. Did not react. She only continued sitting with her back straight and her hands folded in her lap.
Like a statue.
Daniel walked closer. He stood in front of Alina and looked at her with an expression that was difficult to read.
“Alina,” he called softly.
No response.
Daniel knelt in front of her. He lifted her chin gently so that she faced him.
Alina’s eyes were vacant. Looking through Daniel as though the man did not exist.
“You didn’t rest?” Daniel asked as he stroked Alina’s cheek.
No answer.
Daniel drew a deep breath. Trying to suppress the frustration that was beginning to rise.
He knew Alina was shutting herself off. Trying to escape reality by extinguishing all her emotions.
But Daniel did not care.
He had gotten what he wanted today. Alina had complied. Had called her father and said everything Daniel asked.
Now there was only one step left.
Making her truly pregnant.
Daniel stood and began undoing the buttons of his shirt with slow movements.
Alina still did not move. Did not react.
She only sat still as Daniel removed his shirt and draped it over the nearest chair.
Daniel moved closer again. He stood directly in front of Alina.
“I know you’re tired,” he whispered as he touched Alina’s hair. “But this needs to be done. For our future. For our family.”
Alina closed her eyes.
Not in agreement. But because she did not want to see Daniel’s face.
Did not want to look at the man who kept hurting her while speaking of love and family.

Daniel pulled Alina gently to her feet. He removed her nightgown with practiced movements.
Alina let him.
She did not fight. Did not resist.
She only stood still like a mannequin being dressed.
Daniel guided her to lie down on the bed.
Alina lay back with her eyes closed. Her body rigid. Her breathing shallow.
Like the living dead.
Daniel lay beside her. He touched Alina’s face gently.
“I love you,” he whispered before kissing her.
Alina did not return the kiss. Did not open her eyes.
She only lay still as Daniel did what he wanted.
Touching her body. Entering her. Moving above her.
Alina felt nothing.
Not pain. Not fear. Not anger.
Only an emptiness that filled every part of her.
She had separated herself from her own body.
She had left the hollow shell behind for Daniel to use while her spirit drifted far away.
To a place where Daniel could not touch her.
To a place where there was no pain.
Daniel either did not notice or did not care that Alina was no longer truly there.
He kept moving until he finally finished with a low exhale.
Then he lay beside Alina with his breath coming heavily.
He stared at the ceiling with a satisfied smile on his lips.
“Perfect,” he murmured quietly. “I’m certain you’ll be pregnant soon. And everything will be perfect.”
Alina remained lying with her eyes open, staring into the darkness.
Tears slid slowly from the corners of her eyes to her temples.
But she made no sound.
She did not cry out. She did not move.
She only let the tears fall in silence.
Daniel rose after a few minutes. He picked up his shirt and put it back on.

He looked at Alina still lying bare on the bed.
He picked up the blanket and covered her body gently.
“Rest well,” he whispered as he kissed Alina’s forehead. “I’ll come back tomorrow night.”
Daniel walked out and locked the door from outside.
Leaving Alina alone in the darkness.
Without Daniel realizing, just a few meters from Alina’s door, Clarissa stood frozen in the shadows of the dark
corridor.
Her body was rigid. Her hands clenched tightly at her sides. Her jaw locked against the blazing anger inside her.
Her face was pale but her eyes burned full of hatred.
She had come with the intention of finding Daniel.
Planning to knock on the door of his study under the pretense of wanting to discuss something about Junior.
About their child’s progress at school. About matters that needed to be addressed together.
But that was only an excuse.
What Clarissa truly wanted was time alone with Daniel. An opportunity to tempt him again. To try to make him see that Clarissa was still attractive. Still worth wanting.
But when Clarissa went to Daniel’s study, the room was dark. She quickly worked out where Daniel was.
Clarissa went toward Alina’s room. And she saw the faint light beneath the door.
She also heard sounds.
A low exhale.
The soft rhythm of a shifting bed.
Daniel’s voice whispering something indistinct.
Clarissa stopped where she stood. Her breath caught in her throat.
Her feet carried her closer to the door even as her mind screamed at her to leave.
And there, standing a few meters from the door, Clarissa heard everything.
Daniel’s breathing growing louder.
The bed creaking.
Then silence.
Heavy breaths.
And Daniel’s soft whisper. “Perfect. One day you’ll be pregnant. And everything will be perfect.”
Clarissa felt something shatter in her chest.
Something that had been fragile since she left Daniel and this house years ago.

Something she had been trying to piece back together by staying close to Daniel through Junior.
But now it broke completely into fragments.
Daniel was making love to Alina.
