Departure
Ms. Fontaine and Dr. Halvorsen returned to Alina’s room.
Mrs. Helen was still standing in the corridor–her face full of hope and fear mixed together.
“What happened?” she whispered in a voice barely audible.
“We will be taking Mrs. Blackwood to the hospital today,” Ms. Fontaine answered calmly. “In one hour. Mr. Blackwood has already given his permission.”
Mrs. Helen’s eyes immediately filled with tears of immense relief.
“Thank you,” she whispered with a broken voice. “Thank God.”
“We will inform Mrs. Blackwood of this,” Ms. Fontaine said.
Mrs. Helen nodded happily.
Ms. Fontaine knocked gently on Alina’s door before opening it.
Alina was still sitting in the same chair in the same position since they had left her.
But her eyes immediately lifted when Ms. Fontaine and Dr. Halvorsen entered. Staring with fear and hope mixed in equal
proportion.
“Alina,” Dr. Halvorsen said gently while sitting in the chair across from her. “We’ve spoken with your husband about your
condition.”
Alina swallowed with difficulty. She was silent. But the look in her eyes showed curiosity.
“We recommend that you be hospitalized for comprehensive medical care,” Ms. Fontaine answered carefully. “And Mr. Blackwood has agreed. An ambulance will arrive in one hour to take you to St. Catherine’s Medical Center.”
Alina’s expression changed rapidly–from fear to something resembling hope, then back to fear again.
“Hospital?” she repeated with a trembling voice. “I… I will leave this house?”
“Yes,” Dr. Halvorsen answered gently. “You will receive the medical care you need. And in the hospital, you will be safe. There will be independent counselors and social workers you can talk to. You won’t be alone.”
Tears began falling down Alina’s cheeks–tears that mixed between relief and tremendous fear.
Relief because she would finally leave this house.
From the room that had isolated and nearly destroyed her.
But fear because Daniel’s threats still echoed in her head.
‘Richard Hayes has an eight million dollar debt. If I call it in, your father will lose everything.”
“Will Daniel come along?” Alina whispered with a broken voice. “Will he really let me go?”
Ms. Fontaine looked at Alina with eyes full of understanding. She knew Alina was worried Daniel wouldn’t truly allow it
“Mr. Daniel will be permitted to accompany you. Only with certain restrictions,” she said firmly. “We will ensure that no one can pressure or hurt you. Therefore, please trust us. You must let us help you.”
Alina closed her eyes tightly.
She wanted to believe.

Wanted to believe that they could protect her.
But Daniel was so powerful. The man had authority. He had resources and connections that were almost unlimited.
Alina wasn’t sure these two women–however professional and experienced they were–could fight against that?
But she had no other choice. Alina didn’t want to stay in this house and slowly die. Especially now that she was pregnant. At least, Alina had to try to get out. For herself. And for the baby in her womb.
“Alright,” Alina finally whispered in a very quiet voice. “I will go.”
Mrs. Helen helped Alina prepare with trembling hands.
She took a warmer dress from the closet–a simple but comfortable gray dress.
Helped Alina change clothes with gentle and careful movements.
Packed some essentials in a small bag–change of clothes, toiletries, a small notebook that Alina used to use for writing.
“You will be alright, Ma’am,” Mrs. Helen whispered while wiping away tears that kept flowing. “You will be safe.”
Alina looked at Mrs. Helen with glistening eyes.
“Thank you,” she whispered with a voice full of emotion. “For everything. For not giving up on me.”
Mrs. Helen hugged Alina gently–a hug filled with all the feelings she couldn’t express in words.
“I will never give up on you,” she whispered in Alina’s ear. “Never.”
A knock on the door made them separate.
Daniel entered with a controlled expression. Flat but his eyes were sharp.
“Mrs. Helen, could you give me private time with my wife?” he said with a voice that was gentle but had firmness behind it.
Mrs. Helen looked at Alina with eyes full of worry. She nodded with a small movement. She had no choice.
“Of course, Sir.”
Mrs. Helen left with reluctant steps. She closed the door behind her with a soft click.
Daniel walked closer to Alina.
His face showed deep concern–the perfect expression of a husband who deeply loved his sick wife.
But when he spoke, his voice dropped to a cold and dangerous whisper.
“You’re going to the hospital,” he said in a very calm tone. “And you will meet many people. Counselors. Social workers. Doctors. They will all ask questions.”
He took Alina’s chin gently but firmly forcing Alina to look into his eyes.
“But you must remember what I said yesterday,” he whispered with a sharp voice. “Remember what happens if you talk too
much.”
Daniel’s eyes sharpened with terrible intensity.
“Your family’s debt I can call in with one phone call. And if I hear from anyone–that you said things you shouldn’t have said…
He didn’t finish the sentence.

“I’ll make sure you regret it very much.”
Daniel moved even closer to Alina.
“I love you,” he said with a voice that suddenly became gentle–a change so quick it felt terrifying. “And I will come visit you every day. I won’t let you be alone there.”
He kissed Alina’s forehead with a lingering movement.
“I will always be watching you,” he whispered again, very softly in Alina’s ear. “Always. So never forget that.”
Forty–five minutes later, the sound of an ambulance siren was heard from outside.
Alina sat in the chair with the small bag in her lap and hands trembling violently.
Mrs. Helen stood beside her with a pale but determined face.
Ms. Fontaine and Dr. Halvorsen entered with two paramedics–a man and a woman in blue uniforms with calm professional
expressions.
“Mrs. Blackwood,” the female paramedic said with a gentle voice. “We will take you to the hospital now. We have a stretcher ready if you need it, or you can walk if you feel able.”
“I can walk,” Alina whispered in a barely audible voice.
She stood with slow movements–legs trembling but determined.
Mrs. Helen took her arm gently, helping to balance her.
They walked out of the room–Alina’s first steps out of that room in months.
