The Billionaire's Insignificant Wife novel Chapter 187

To be able to get back together with Alina as soon as possible, Daniel didn't give himself time to stop.

In the midst of news of Montgomery Group's increasingly widespread decline—plummeting shares, business partners switching sides, a name beginning to crack—Daniel had already moved toward his next target.

This time, toward the heart of Alina's family.

---

Hotel Grandeur was hosting a fundraising event for a children's education foundation. The ballroom was filled with upper-class women in expensive gowns and jewelry glittering under chandelier light. The sound of light conversation and clinking glasses filled the air.

At one table, Helena Hayes sat surrounded by her socialite friends.

The woman looked graceful though her youth was behind her. Her face, which closely resembled Alina's, radiated the warmth of someone who knew nothing of the storm battering her daughter.

Helena knew nothing.

Not about the court. Not about the welfare review. Not about her daughter who was now lying in a hospital bed, thin and fragile, caught between a cruel husband and a hope for freedom.

All Helena knew was that Alina was busy taking care of her family. That recently her daughter rarely called because she needed complete rest due to a pregnancy that was apparently quite difficult.

Richard and Emma had deliberately hidden everything. Helena had a heart condition, and they were afraid bad news would cause her condition to drop. So they kept making excuses about Alina. And fortunately—or ironically—Daniel himself had suppressed the media from reporting anything about the trial. No one knew the truth except a handful of people.

Including Helena.

So when Daniel appeared at the event—handsome, authoritative, with a perfectly practiced smile—the women at that table immediately welcomed him enthusiastically.

"Mr. Blackwood!" one of them greeted. "What an honor to have you here."

"The ideal son-in-law," another whispered admiringly.

Helena smiled proudly. Her eyes shining seeing her son-in-law.

"Daniel," she greeted warmly. "I didn't expect you to come. How is Alina? Is she alright?"

Daniel bowed politely, smiling at his mother-in-law with full respect. "Mother. Alina is fine. She's resting a lot right now. I actually came here to speak briefly with you, if you don't mind."

"Of course!" Helena stood happily.

Daniel took her arm and led her to a VIP seat already prepared in the corner of the room—separate from the crowd, but visible enough for Helena's friends to watch with admiration and without the slightest suspicion.

'How fortunate Helena is,' they thought. 'Having such an attentive son-in-law.'

---

Once they were both seated, Helena immediately asked, a mother's concern audible in her voice.

"Daniel, be honest with me. Is Alina disturbed by the bad coverage a few days ago? I briefly read some news from the media, but it wasn't very clear."

Daniel smiled reassuringly. "Mother doesn't need to worry. That was just cheap gossip that I've already handled. Alina is fine. She just needs rest, especially in her current condition."

Helena exhaled with relief, her hand touching her chest. "Thank goodness. I was so worried. But I trust you're taking good care of her."

"Always, Mother." Daniel bowed his head with perfect humility. "Alina is everything to me."

That lie slipped out so smoothly.

Daniel then changed the topic with pleasantries that sounded sincere. "Oh yes, Mother. I heard David just graduated from college, right? How is he doing?"

Helena's face immediately brightened. "That's right! You still remember. David graduated with satisfying grades. I'm very proud of him."

"That's wonderful news," Daniel said with manufactured enthusiasm. "So, has David decided where he'll work?"

Helena's smile dimmed slightly. A hesitation appeared on her face.

"That's what we're thinking about," she said quietly. "Actually David wants to join the family company. But... you may have heard, his father's company hasn't been doing well lately. It would be very difficult if David works there now."

Helena paused for a moment, then looked at Daniel hesitantly—a mixture of shame and hope.

"Daniel... I know this might be too forward," she said carefully. "But if it's possible... could you accept David to work in your company? He's a smart and hardworking child. I won't ask for special treatment. Just an opportunity."

Daniel didn't hesitate for even a second.

"Of course, Mother," he answered warmly, as if the request was the easiest thing in the world. "I'll welcome David with open arms. He's family. And Blackwood Enterprises always needs talented young people."

Helena's eyes glistened with gratitude. "Oh, Daniel. Thank you. Thank you so much. You truly are a good son-in-law. Alina is really lucky to have you."

Daniel smiled broadly. Behind that smile, something cold turned in his head.

The more favors Daniel gave to Alina's family. The harder it would be for them to turn against him. The easier it would be for Daniel to control everything.
