Margaret entered with perfect posture, already impeccably dressed though it was only eight in the morning.

“Daniel,” she greeted with a slightly disapproving tone. “We need to talk.”

“About why you slept in Alina’s room last night instead of in the master bedroom with Clarissa.”

Daniel stared at his mother with a carefully neutral expression. “That’s my personal business.”

“Your personal business that affects the entire household.” Margaret stepped closer, her voice dropping to something sharper. “Clarissa destroyed half the master bedroom last night in a tantrum because you didn’t come. Staff heard screaming. There’s broken glass everywhere. That’s not acceptable.”

“Maybe she shouldn’t have expected me to immediately sleep with her on her first night moving in,” Daniel said flatly.

“You agreed she would move into the master bedroom-”

“I agreed she would move into the mansion. Didn’t say I would share a room with her.”

Margaret stared at him with barely concealed frustration. “Daniel, what are you doing? You brought Clarissa back for Junior. To provide a proper family. But you sleep with Alina—”

“Alina is still my wife.” Those words came out suddenly, firmly. “Legally, she’s still my wife. And I have the right to sleep in my wife’s room if I want.”

Silence.

Margaret stared at him with something that might be shock in her eyes.

“You never cared about ‘rights‘ with Alina before,” she said quietly. “Why now?”

Daniel had no answer for that.

Or maybe he did, but wasn’t ready to admit it. Even to himself.

“I’m tired, Mother,” he said instead, turning to the window. “And I have a meeting in an hour. If that’s all-”

“This isn’t over, Daniel.” Margaret’s voice was cold now. “Clarissa is here to stay. And you need to decide–do you want a proper family with Junior’s biological mother? Or do you want to keep playing around with a contract wife you should have ended long ago?”

She left before Daniel could answer.
