“From what you’ve told me about the kiss, about Daniel’s changing behavior–be careful. Men who realize too late what they’re losing can be unpredictable. Sometimes dangerous.”
Alina thought about Daniel’s arms around her. His whispered apology. The guilt in his eyes.
“I’ll be careful,” she promised.
After they hung up, Alina stayed in the bathroom for a long moment, staring at her reflection in the mirror.
She looked different than she had a week ago. Thinner. Paler. But her eyes were different too–not empty anymore, but determined.
She had a plan now. A lawyer. A chance.
It wasn’t much. But it was more than she’d had before.
Alina hid the phone back in its spot and returned to her bedroom. As she sat on the bed, she heard footsteps in the corridor–Daniel’s distinctive tread, pausing outside her door.
He didn’t knock. Didn’t enter. Just stood there for a long moment before walking away.
Alina closed her eyes, thinking about Rachel’s warning.

Men who realize too late what they’re losing can be unpredictable.
She’d spent five years trying to be seen by Daniel.
And now that he was finally looking at her, she was planning her escape.
The irony wasn’t lost on her.
But it was too late for him now. Too late for them.
She’d made her choice.
And she would see it through.
