The Drawings That Revealed Everything
Three days after the Optimus incident, Junior still hadn’t spoken to Alina.
Every time Alina was allowed out of her room for supervised visits, Junior only stared at her with confused and hurt eyes, then turned away.
No hugs. No “Mama.” No excited stories about school or dreams or anything.
Only devastating silence.
And Alina could see the changes in the boy. Drooping shoulders. Eyes that had lost their sparkle. The way he hugged himself as if trying to protect something fragile.
On the fourth day, the phone rang in Daniel’s office while he was reviewing contracts.
“Mr. Blackwood, this is Miss Stevens. Junior’s teacher.”
Daniel straightened up, his voice immediately alert. “Is there a problem?”
“I’m afraid so, yes. Junior has been very… different this week. He’s not focusing in class. Not playing with his friends during recess. And today when we had a math quiz, he just stared at the blank paper for a full half hour without writing anything.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened. “Did he say why?”
“I tried to talk to him but he just shook his head. Mr. Blackwood, Junior is usually one of my most enthusiastic students. But now it’s like he’s… shut down. Is there something happening at home I should know about?”
Daniel closed his eyes, pressing the bridge of his nose. “There have been some… family changes. We’re handling it.
“I understand families have private matters. But Mr. Blackwood, with all due respect, Junior needs professional support. Such drastic behavioral changes, especially at his age, can indicate serious emotional distress.”
“What do you suggest?”
“A child psychologist. Someone who can help Junior process whatever he’s going through. I have some referrals if you’d like.”
Daniel opened his laptop, his fingers already typing. “Send me their names and contacts. I’ll arrange an appointment as soon as possible.”
“Thank you, Mr. Blackwood. And one more thing.”
“Yes?”
“During craft time today, Junior drew pictures. Usually he draws robots or superheroes. But today…” Miss Stevens hesitated. “He drew crying people. Over and over. The paper was full of sad faces. I kept the drawings if you’d like to see them.”
