The Billionaire's Insignificant Wife novel Chapter 9

Daniel stood in the doorwayclearly just down from the second floor, tie still perfect but there was tension in his shoulders. Shortly after, Margaret came from the direction of the main entrance and stood beside him, looking at the scene with narrowed

eyes.

Junior immediately hid his face in Alina’s neck, his grip tightening.

Alina,Daniel stepped inside, his voice controlled but with a dangerous edge. You should be in your room.

Junior needs me,Alina said simply.

He has Clarissa-

He doesn’t want Clarissa,Alina cut in, looking at Daniel without blinking. He wants me. Because I’m his mother.

Margaret stepped forward, voice sharp. Enough! Alina, let go of Junior. Now.

No.

One word. Firm. Defiant.

Margaret’s face hardened. You dare defy me?

I’m not defying anyone,Alina said, but her grip on Junior didn’t loosen. I’m just protecting a child I love from people who are treating him like a pawn.

How dare you-Margaret began losing control, but Daniel raised his hand, stopping her.

He walked closer, looking at Alina with an unreadable expression.

Alina, his voice was softer now, almost coaxing. You’re not making this easier for Junior. He’s confused. He needs stability-

He needs his MOTHER,Alina cut in, voice breaking. Not a stranger who’s suddenly claiming him. Not people fighting over custody like he’s a prize. He needs someone who loves him unconditionally. And that’s me, Daniel. Always me.

They stared at each othera silent but intense battle of wills.

Daniel could see the defiance in Alina’s eyes. But there was also something else. Pain. Desperation. Genuine love for Junior. And something in his chest twisted uncomfortably.

Mr. Harris,Daniel finally spoke without looking away from Alina. Please escort Mrs. Blackwood back to her room.NO!Junior suddenly lifted his head, looking at Daniel with red, tearfilled eyes. Don’t take Mama! Please, Papa! Junior promises to be a good boy! Junior will eat all vegetables! Junior won’t be naughty! But please don’t separate Junior from Mama!

Those wordsa desperate plea from a sixyearoldmade the entire room fall silent.

Daniel looked at his sontruly lookedand saw for the first time how much damage they’d all done.

Junior shouldn’t be begging like this. Shouldn’t be desperate and scared.

Junior,Daniel knelt, eye level with his son. No one’s going to separate you from Mama Alina-

But Papa is doing it!Junior shouted, frustration and fear boiling over. Papa locked Mama in her room! Mr. Harris won’t let Junior in! Grandma says Mama is sick but Junior knows Mama isn’t sickyou’re all lying to Junior!

Out of the mouths of babes. Brutal truth from innocence.

Daniel couldn’t answer. Because everything Junior said was true.

Alina couldn’t bear to see Junior cry. She immediately tried to calm him.

Junior,Alina whispered, wiping tears from the child’s cheeks gently. Papa isn’t lying. Papa justPapa is trying to do what he thinks is best.

But that’s not best!Junior insisted with a child’s simple but powerful logic. Best is Mama with Junior. Mama always makes Junior happy. Why doesn’t Papa understand?

Why indeed?

Daniel stood, feeling every pair of eyes in the room watching himwaiting for a decision.

Margaret with the expectation that he would enforce the rules.

Clarissa with hope that he would remove Alina.

Mr. Harris with professional neutrality, waiting for orders.

And Alina looking at him with a mixture of hope and resignation. As if she was simultaneously hoping Daniel would do the right thing, but also resigned that he wouldn’t.

Everyone out,Daniel said suddenly. Except Alina and Junior.

Margaret’s eyebrows rose. Daniel-

Out. Now.

Voice firm. Final. No room for argument.

Margaret looked at her son with a mixture of surprise and displeasure, but eventually she nodded. Fine. But we’ll talk about this later.

She left with rigid posture, clearly not happy.

Clarissa was more reluctant. Daniel, I think I should stay-

Clarissa. Please.

There was something in Daniel’s toneexhaustion, maybethat made Clarissa finally comply, though with obvious reluctance. Mr. Harris nodded and followed, closing the door behind him.

Only Daniel, Alina, and Junior remained in the playroom that suddenly felt too quiet.

Junior was still in Alina’s embrace, but now he was looking at Daniel with wary eyeslike waiting for the other shoe to drop. Daniel walked to the window, staring at the garden with hands in pocketsa posture Alina recognized as thinking deeply.

Silence stretched for almost a full minute.

You can have Junior today,Daniel said without turning around.

Alina froze.

But only for today.Daniel turned and looked at Alina sharply. After this, if you defy me agam, don’t expect me to let you see Junior.

Daniel walked away from the playroom. Leaving Alina and Junior crying hard in her arms.

Alina hugged Junior tightly. Channeling her longing and fear. She knew Daniel’s threat wasn’t empty. That man was capable separating her from Junior. And Alina realized for now she had no power to fight back, except to obey

That night, after Junior finally sleptexhausted from crying Alina was escorted back to her room by Mr. Harris. Daniel sat alone in his study.

On his desk were documents Mr. Harrison had left behind. Prenuptial Agreement (Revised). Thick, full of legal jargon, but the essence was simple.

Alina would have no claim to anything. No alimony. No property settlement. No custody or visitation rights for Junior.

If they divorced, Alina would walk away with nothing.

Exactly what Margaret wanted.

Daniel stared at the document with a mixture of feelings he didn’t completely understand.

This was reasonable, right? Protecting family assets. Ensuring Junior’s future was secure.

But why did his chest feel tight?

Why couldn’t he get the image of Alinabroken and desperate in the playroom earlierout of his mind?

Why were Junior’s words-Papa always makes Mama sad-haunting him?

There was a knock on the door.

Come in,Daniel said without looking up.
