Forgotten Memories?

Alina felt the floor beneath her feet vanish. The world seemed to spin in slow motion, Mrs. Helen’s voice sounding distant, as if coming from the far end of a very long hallway.

Amnesia?Alina repeated in a voice barely audible. You meanhe’s forgotten everything?

Mrs. Helen shook her head quickly, her hands trembling as she reached out to steady Alina by the arm.

Not everything, Madam. According to the nurse therehe still remembers Mr. Daniel, still remembers Mrs. Margaret. He still knows his own name, his agebut many of the memories from the past few years are gone. Including-Mrs. Helen’s voice caught for a moment. Including the memories with you, Madam.

Alina stared blankly. Her chest felt tight, as though an invisible hand were squeezing her heart.

II don’t exist in Junior’s memory? He’s forgotten me?

Mrs. Helen could only nod slowly, tears continuing to stream down her face.

Mr. Junior still remembers your name. But he doesn’t recall the details. He doesn’t remember all the time you spent together. He doesn’t remember anything that happened when he was close to you.

No

Alina took a step back, her back hitting the wall. The coldness of the surface seeped into her bones, but she barely felt it. All she felt was a huge void that had suddenly opened inside her chest.

How could this happen?Alina murmured. How could Junior forget me?

Miss

Mrs. Helen looked at Alina with pity, unsure what to say to comfort her.

Please tell me this isn’t real, Mrs. Helen,Alina sobbed, staring at Helen while gripping the woman’s hand tightly. Please tell me Junior is okay.

Mrs. Helen’s dried tears began to fall again. She couldn’t bear to see Alina crying.

How could a child so young lose his memory,Alina wept. How could he forget me.

Alina’s body trembled. Her heart ached at the thought of Junior forgetting her.

All this time I’ve prayed for God to always protect him. To keep him healthy. But whyAlina’s words were interrupted by sobs. Why would God let him get hurt, even to the point of losing his memory.

Alina’s cries grew louder. Her body slid down to the floor, unable to support its own weight. Her legs grew weaker with every thought of Junior now confused about himself and his surroundings.

Why didn’t God protect my Junior? My child. The apple of my eye. Is God angry with me, so He made Junior forget me?

Miss, don’t say that,Mrs. Helen sobbed along with her. This isn’t your fault. It’s because of the accident. The doctor said a child’s brain can still recover. Many memories might return over time. The most important thing now is that he’s safe, he’s conscious.

But those words felt empty to Alina.

She remembered Junior’s face, always beaming with a wide smile whenever he saw her. She remembered how the

little boy used to hug her legs while laughing, calling Mamain that spoiled, cheerful tone that melted her heart. She remembered the nights when Junior insisted on sleeping in her room because he was afraid of the dark, and she had to tell stories until he fell asleep.

All of that was now nothing but emptiness to Junior.

Alina covered her mouth with her hand, holding back the sobs that threatened to break free.

Why didn’t Daniel tell me anything?she asked softly. Why didn’t he give me any news? My messages aren’t even read. My calls aren’t answered.

Mrs. Helen looked down, as if hesitant to reply.

I don’t know for sure, Madam. Perhaps Mr. Daniel wanted to discuss this in person.

Or perhaps,Alina thought bitterly, Daniel deliberately hid this to keep me away from Junior.

The thought stabbed sharply. She remembered how lately Daniel had been trying to distance her from Junior because of Clarissa and Margaret. Daniel hadn’t even allowed Alina to visit Junior in the hospital.

Alina took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.

Mrs. Helen,Alina said quietly but firmly, I want to go to the hospital. Now.

Madam, it’s already night. And there are guards at the front. We can’t leave without Mr. Daniel’s permission.

I don’t care,Alina cut in. Her eyes flashed with worry. I have to see how Junior is. I have to knowif it’s true that he doesn’t remember me.
