Maya swatted his chest, her palm flattening briefly against the warm, solid plane of him before she pushed him back a step. “You’re unbelievable. Truly.”
She shook her head, fighting a smile. “But aside from your… stamina… we actually need sleep too,
you know?”
She drew in a slow breath, the teasing edge in her expression fading as reality settled back in.
“Hudson and Cruz will be at your office early,” she reminded him gently. “And I’m staying home with
Jaime. I need to pack. Make sure everything’s ready.”
Her fingers tightened slightly in the fabric of his shirt.
“We have a long trip ahead of us.”
Damien’s smirk didn’t fade, but his gaze sharpened. “Monroe and James can accommodate them. My priorities have shifted.”
He took her hand and lifted her knuckles to his lips, pressing a lingering kiss.
“But you’re right,” he added, his voice lowering. “If we’re walking into battle for Jaime’s future, I
don’t intend to exhaust my strongest ally.”
His hands found her waist and drew her back into him, the teasing edge gone.
He turned her in his arms and wrapped himself around her from behind, his body warm and solid at her back – anchoring her without force.
His chin brushed her shoulder as he leaned down, his breath warm against the curve of her neck, steady and grounding.
“Let me help you wash up,” he murmured, his arms tightening around her waist. “We’ll be quick. I
promise.”
Maya let out a soft, shaky breath, her resistance finally dissolving under the weight of his care. She leaned back into him, closing her eyes as she let his strength steady her.
“You’re impossible, Damien,” she whispered.
“I’m efficient,” he corrected softly, his lips brushing the shell of her ear.
His hands stayed at her waist as he guided her toward the bathroom, his touch firm but unhurried.
“Then we’ll both go check on him,” he added, his voice low and grounding. “Come on, love. He needs to see we’re okay again.”

A faint pause.
“I’d rather not stay on his bad side.”

Maya’s brows lifted, a tired but amused glint in her eyes. She turned slightly in his arms to look up
at him. “Since when are you worried about being on someone’s bad side?”
Damien leaned down and pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead, his expression turning
mock-serious.
“Didn’t you see how he grilled Ashcroft earlier? That kid threw him under the bus multiple times
without blinking.”
He let out a low, dry chuckle as he led her into the bathroom. “Your brother has a terrifyingly sharp
eye for detail, love. If he thinks I’m not treating you right, I’m fairly certain he has a plan to make me disappear before sunrise.”
Maya laughed, bright and genuine, the sound finally cutting through the weight of the morning. “He
does care about me. And he’s like you-he doesn’t miss a thing.”
[“Exactly,” Damien murmured, his gaze darkening as he lingered on her. He leaned closer, his voice
dropping into a low, rough rumble. “As much as I want to keep you all to myself tonight… I’ll have to hand you over-temporarily-to my future brother-in-law.”
Maya laughed, the sound light and genuine. Good one, she thought, shaking her head.
“But first….” His fingers brushed the shower handle, and the water hissed to life against the tile.
He shot her a wicked, confident glance, that familiar spark lighting his dark eyes.
“Do you have any idea how impossible it is to stay focused… with you looking this damn tempting in my shirt?”
Maya’s breath hitched, a nervous laugh escaping her.
Slowly, he traced the buttons of the oversized shirt she was wearing-his shirt-unfastening them one by one. “We’d better take that quick shower… before I decide I’m not feeling quite so ‘efficient after all.”
The rest of the shower was mercifully uneventful.
Damien, to his credit, kept his promise. It was, indeed, a quick shower-nothing more than warm
water, quiet touches, and light conversation.
Steam curled around them as he rinsed the last of the soap from her shoulders, his hands steady, unhurried.

“Oh, I forgot to tell you,” Maya said softly over the sound of the water.
“Tell me what?” he asked.

“My professor sent over all the materials I’ll need for my final exam.” A small smile touched her lips. “He also confirmed that the virtual setup has been approved for the rest of the semester. I just need to complete the online coursework and pass the assessments. The final exam is in three months, so I have plenty of time to prepare.”
Damien’s brows lifted slightly. “Good.”
“You really can move mountains, Mr. Blackwood,” she teased lightly, though the gratitude in her
