Damien’s gaze darkened, hardening in a way that made the air between them tighten. His hand stayed at her jaw, firm, grounding, yet his eyes held that dangerous glint she knew too well.
“The last person who chose me…” His voice dropped low, almost a growl, “ended up dead.”
Her breath hitched, heart pounding. She knew who he meant-Cassandra. The one whose death
haunted Damien, the one whose loss had cast long, dark shadows over his life.
Her death had become his curse, a chain that kept his own happiness just out of reach and kept
him squarely under Viktor Volkov’s watchful eye-the very reason Volkov never let him be.
And yet, he didn’t let go. He leaned closer, letting the warning hang between them, heavy and real.
“I’m not saying this to scare you, love,” he murmured, softer now, the sharp edge of his warning
melting into the warmth she knew so well. “I’m saying it because you need to understand what it
means… choosing me isn’t just about love or loyalty. It’s about surviving the storm I carry. You can
step into my world, but you can’t pretend it’s safe.”
The shadow of her death still clung to him, a storm he carried in silence, a storm that made every
choice with him dangerous.
Maya’s lips quirked, almost defiantly. “Too bad… because I’m already in it.”
Damien’s eyes darkened, a flicker of conflict crossing his features-part fear, part desire. For a
moment, the weight of what he carried, the storm she’d chosen to step into, pressed against him.
He drew a slow breath, jaw tightening, before finally meeting her gaze again.
“You’re such a foolish girl,” he murmured finally, his voice low, firm, threaded with the same
intensity that always made her chest tighten. “What have I done to deserve someone like you?”
He didn’t wait for her answer. His hands found her waist, drawing her close. Her chest pressed
against his, and the steady warmth of him anchored her in a way the world outside never could.
His forehead rested lightly against hers, eyes dark and unreadable. “I love you… so much, Maya,” he
murmured, low and rough. “I just… I want to protect you. To keep you safe.”
“I… I know,” Maya whispered, letting her hands settle over his chest. “I love you too, Damien. And I still choose you. I don’t care about the storm. I’ll face it with you.”
For a long moment, he simply held her, letting the weight of her words sink in. Then, softer now, he leaned down, pressing a careful, lingering kiss to her temple. “You’re reckless,” he murmured, a note of admiration-and warning-threaded through his tone.

Maya’s fingers traced the line of his jaw, memorizing the warmth, the tension, the raw edges of him. “Then let me be reckless with you, Damien.”
A faint, almost imperceptible smile tugged at his lips. “You really don’t know what you’re signing up for, do you?”
She pressed closer, forehead against his. “I do. And I don’t care.”
