"Right? It's just her luck, honestly."
Karla really did think Yolande had gotten the short end of the stick.
"But, as long as she knows what's good for her, things will get better for her. Life always does."
In Karla’s eyes, Yolande wasn’t someone you could push around for long. She might look quiet and obedient, but she definitely knew how to play things so that Ophelia kept Yolande’s mom in check. Karla actually admired a bit of cleverness, as long as it didn’t end up hurting family.
"Anyway, enough about that. Are you busy this afternoon? Want to come with me to check out a film set?"
Karla had plans to drop by a shoot later. Since Tiffany had brought up the idea of her daughter entering showbiz, Karla figured Claire might be bored and thought it’d be fun to get her out of the house.
"Karla, I’m not really interested in the entertainment world. I don’t plan on getting into it, either."
"It doesn’t hurt to go have a look. Your grandpa said you’ve been way too stressed lately. You should relax a little."
"I’m taking you to a movie set. It’s always buzzing there."
"Is there any celebrity you like? You never know, you might run into someone and score a few autographs."
Claire honestly didn’t have a favorite, but Shirley definitely did. She’d fall for a new star every other week.
"Could I see Oakley there?"
Claire knew Shirley was obsessed with Oakley. If she managed to get his autograph for her, it’d be a way bigger deal than any normal present.
"Actually, yes! Oakley’s on set today. That’s who I’m going to visit."
"Oakley, everyone’s saying Karla’s signed a new girl. You hear anything about it?"
Elena was already jealous. She’d once tried to sign with Karla herself, but Karla wouldn’t even give her the time of day, barely looking her way. Elena couldn’t stand Karla, but since she was Oakley’s agent, she had to tread carefully.
Now, with talk of a new signing, Elena’s jealousy was eating her alive. She couldn’t help but wonder who this lucky girl was to get noticed by that old witch.
"No idea," Oakley said, not even looking up. And he was telling the truth.
Karla hadn’t shown any interest in signing anyone new lately. In fact, she’d been gathering up piles of designer outfits, makeup, and jewelry for gifts. Was that all meant for this supposed newcomer?
Who had enough clout to make Karla go all out like that? Most people might not know the answer, but Oakley definitely did. There was more to Karla than most would ever guess.
