“Lily…”

John acted as if he couldn’t feel the pain, still gazing at Lily with a desperate, feverish intensity. He looked as though he wanted to imprint every inch of the face he loved so dearly onto his memory, deep into his bones.
“John, my life is none of your business.” Lily tightened her grip on James’s hand. Her eyes held nothing but cold detachment and disgust for John. “I only wish to never have to see you or be bothered by you again.”
James telling him to get out, even kicking him, hadn’t fazed John. But hearing Lily coldly draw a boundary, wishing he would vanish from her life forever, cut him to the core.
However, he didn’t press her like before. Instead, his eyes red–rimmed, he tried to force a smile. Realizing the attempt looked worse than weeping, he let it go and spoke in a deliberately light voice.
“Alright. I won’t bother you again. Lily, be well. You and James… you must be happy.”
The thought of another man kissing her and possessing her made his heart feel as if it were being pierced by a thousand arrows. But the pain of being pierced was better than the utter devastation of hearing she was dead. No matter who she ended up with, as long as she was alive, that was enough.
As long as she’s alive…
With that, he suddenly turned and bolted toward the villa gate, as if chased by a ghost. He was afraid if he walked too slowly, he wouldn’t be able to leave. He was afraid she would see the tears streaming down his face as he ran.
“Simon, you shouldn’t bother me again either.”
After John left, Lily’s gaze fell coldly on Simon. Seeing him sitting painfully on the ground, clutching a piece of osmanthus cake, Lily felt nothing but icy detachment. Childhood friends drifting apart was not uncommon after a massive fallout. There was no need for regret.
“I am your cousin–in–law. We are relatives, but that is all. Out of respect for your mother and grandmother, I don’t want us to be enemies, but I truly do not want to see you. It’s unsettling. Other than unavoidable family gatherings, I don’t want any contact with you. Please leave my house and don’t come back. Showing up uninvited is inappropriate.”
“Lizzy…”
Simon didn’t want to leave. He had too much affection for her, too much regret, and he

desperately wanted to make amends.
But just as James had said, he knew his mistake was unforgivable. What was the point of pursuing her? He also realized that she didn’t care about his repentance or his compensation. It was meaningless.
More accurately, she was completely and utterly indifferent to the boy who had once shared a life–and–death struggle with her.
At that thought, Simon suddenly lost the strength to persist.
His face pale, he got up from the ground. “I… I won’t bother you. I’m leaving now. I won’t make you angry.”
The simple act of saying “Cousin–in–law“-a title he knew he had to use–seemed to drain all his life force. He stumbled, nearly falling back onto the ground.
Remembering Lily’s intense aversion to him, he forced himself upright, took a deep breath, and stumbled out of the villa, clutching his aching chest.
The moment he stepped outside, he saw John hunched over, leaning against a tree trunk in pain.
When Simon had wrongly believed Elsa was his Lizzy, he had been fine with John disrespecting and hurting Lily for Elsa’s sake. But now that he knew Lily was his Lizzy, the thought of John’s past betrayal and cruelty made his blood boil. He wanted to kill him.
“John, you deserve to die!”
Simon charged forward and punched John hard in the face.
“Lily is Lizzy… Lizzy is my sister. How dare you put the wedding dress she personally sewed on Elsa without her permission? That pendant was a keepsake from her parents. She cared so much about it. How could you give it to Elsa just because she said she liked it? Lizzy gave you everything. She stayed by your side when you were injured. How dare you secretly marry Elsa behind her back?”
“How dare you abandon and trample on her heart? John, how dare you?”
Simon punched John repeatedly in the face. Thinking of how wholeheartedly Lily had loved John, only to have him repeatedly scorn her affection–and how all their friends had looked down on her, too–he wanted to beat the scumbag to death.
