The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 228

Rosalind was left completely stranded. She never expected Yvonne to just turn her back and abandon her. She stood frozen in the hallway, burning with humiliation.

Nora crossed her arms over her chest, her gaze locking onto the trembling girl. "Have you made your choice, Rosalind? Do I hit you back, or do I call the police?"

Rosalind had targeted Nora thinking she was an easy target, a nobody she could bully for fun. She hadn't realized the woman was made of steel.

"Sorry. Are you happy now?" Rosalind forced the words through her painfully clenched teeth. Her face was scorching red, angry tears welling in the corners of her eyes.

Nora raised an eyebrow, entirely unimpressed. "That hardly evens the score. You slapped me."

There was absolutely no way Rosalind was going to stand there and let a commoner slap her across the face. "I'll have my dad compensate you later! Don't push your luck!" she shrieked, before turning and sprinting down the hallway as fast as her heels would carry her.

The few onlookers who had gathered to watch the drama unfold awkwardly scattered, wanting no part of the fallout.

Standing alone in the quiet corridor, Nora let out a heavy sigh and shook her head. She walked back out toward the garden, hoping to finally get back to the buffet, when she heard Nolan calling her name.

"Sorry about that! My dad needed me for something stupid. Are you full yet? Want me to give you a tour?"

"There's an amazing greenhouse right behind the—"

Nolan's eager rambling came to a dead halt the second he got a clear look at the side of her face. "What the hell happened to your cheek?"

Nora reached up, lightly touching her skin. It was hot to the touch and already swelling. "I ran into a troublemaker. Do you know where I can get some ice?"

She wasn't the type to run and tattle on people. She glanced around the patio, trying to spot a waiter who could fetch her a cold compress.

"Who did this?" Nolan grabbed her hand, stopping her from turning away. His voice was thick with disbelief. "Why didn't you come find me?"

Nora looked at him, genuinely confused by his intense reaction. "It's really not that big of a deal. Why would I bother you with it?"
