"What the hell is the 'childhood-crush-to-lovers trope'? You've been reading way too many romance webnovels lately."
"Actually, speaking of webnovels, did any of you catch that local trending topic online today?"
One of the detectives chimed in, and the others looked over, their interest piqued. "Nope. We just wrapped up the Rosalind Lowe case. I haven't even finished the paperwork yet. Who has time to scroll through trending topics?"
"What happened?"
The detective explained, "My cousin actually mentioned it to me a few days ago. Apparently, this brand-new author popped up out of nowhere. The book went completely viral overnight, shooting straight from the bottom of the barrel to the absolute top of the bestseller list."
Even if the detectives used to read online fiction in their younger years, their grueling schedules left them with zero time for it now.
They weren't exactly plugged into the webnovel scene.
So the news didn't get much of a reaction.
"Doesn't that happen in every industry? Why would a popular book hit the local trending news?"
"Because the whole thing is incredibly creepy!"
The detective leaned in. "I heard the book barely had any readers at first. The only reason it blew up is because of an author's note they left recently."
"An author's note? Like, a message from the writer?"
"Yeah, you know, the little section at the end of the chapter where the writer talks directly to the readers."
"Okay, and?"
"Well, according to the handful of people who were following the book early on, the author was completely silent. They just dropped the chapters every day and never said a single word. The notes section was always totally blank. But then, out of nowhere, they finally left a message."
"And it said: 'I have a major project to take care of tonight. If everything goes according to plan, tomorrow's chapter will be based on exactly what I do tonight.'"
"The readers were super confused. They were just there to read a thriller; nobody cared about the author's real-life schedule!"
"But the next day, the author actually updated the book—and the brand-new chapter was a detailed description of a gruesome murder!"
