The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 289

Nora gave a sharp nod and reached out to take the interrogation logbook.

"I'll head in."

"We owe you one, Dr. Hayes."

Nora was practically pulling double duty tonight.

But thankfully, she was only required to act as the official stenographer for the interview.

Her primary objective was simply to sit in the room, listen closely to the suspect's voice, and confirm whether or not he was the same man who had picked up Evelyn's phone hours ago.

Before stepping inside, she handed her own cell phone over to an IT technician to extract the audio recording of the bizarre phone call, then pushed open the heavy door to the interrogation room.

Sensing the shift in the room's atmosphere, the man slumped in the metal chair slowly lifted his head.

Nora immediately locked eyes with him.

He had incredibly striking, handsome features, and even slouched over a table, it was obvious he was unusually tall.

He was dressed in a rumpled gray sweatsuit, his damp hair plastered to the sides of his face. He radiated an aura of deep, tragic exhaustion, yet there was an undeniable, boyish innocence clinging to him.

It was a bizarre, almost magnetic contradiction.

Nora quietly took her seat at the edge of the table.

The lead detective wasted no time. "State your name for the record."

"My name is Liam Jennings."

"And what was your relationship with the victim, Evelyn Tate?"

Liam's pale lips began to tremble violently. His pupils dilated in real time, as if he were being violently dragged back to a horrific memory.

"Evelyn... she is my girlfriend."

The detective instantly seized on the subtle hesitation in his voice. "Why did you pause just now?"
