On the way to the police station, Nora learned the general situation from Nathan.
"So right now, three people have completely different stories. And since the victim, Evelyn, can't speak for herself, it's hard for the police to verify who is telling the truth?"
"Yeah."
Nathan summarized it concisely. "Actually, there is some overlap in their statements."
"According to Evelyn's parents, she was just settling with Liam. She was ambitious and desperate for a better life. After coming to Luminport City, Mr. Lawson, the developer of her apartment complex, took a liking to her. From then on, Mr. Lawson pursued her relentlessly, even renting her a prime apartment at a ridiculously low price."
"But Liam didn't want his girlfriend tied up with another man, so he gritted his teeth and scraped together enough money to buy that apartment."
"Later, they had a falling out. Evelyn kicked Liam out. Worried about her, Liam rented the apartment next door so he could stay close and take care of her."
"Evelyn's parents blame Mr. Lawson for whatever happened to her, so they're blindly going after him for compensation."
"Liam, on the other hand, claims his relationship with Evelyn was in a major crisis. This made him insecure, constantly feeling on edge."
"Then there's Mr. Lawson's perspective. He says that even though their relationship seemed somewhat stable, one of them was constantly causing drama, so it was doomed to fail."
Nathan added, "Even though everyone views Evelyn and Liam's relationship differently, one thing remains absolutely consistent—Liam has a very strong and actionable motive for murder."
Nora gasped.
If that were true, proving Liam lied would mean the case was half solved.
"How exactly did Liam and Evelyn live their lives? Why did everyone see something completely different?"
Nathan chuckled softly. "We don't need to worry about that. A lie doesn't become the truth just because it's repeated enough times."
"The evidence left behind by their daily lives won't lie, so we won't let ourselves get dragged into their web of deceit."
Nora nodded.
