The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 333

"Evelyn Tate?"

Nora asked, her voice tight with disbelief. "Are you absolutely sure she said Evelyn Tate? This Evelyn Tate?"

She quickly typed out 'Evelyn Tate' on her phone and held the screen up for the female officer to see.

"Yes."

The officer nodded firmly. "We had her confirm it multiple times. She was adamant about the name."

"According to her statement, Evelyn abducted her three days ago. For the duration of her captivity, she was locked inside the trunk of a car. She attempted to escape once but was dragged back. It wasn't until today, when Evelyn hastily shoved her into that vehicle in the garage and took off, that she finally managed to break out—right as the two of you were walking by."

"What?"

Nora's eyes darkened with heavy suspicion, every word forced through gritted teeth. "You're saying Evelyn shoved her into that car today?"

"The car in the underground parking lot?"

The officer found Nora's intense reaction a bit odd, but considering her position in Forensics, she nodded. "Yes, Dr. Hayes."

"Is there something wrong with that timeline?"

"Everything is wrong with it."

Nathan stepped forward, lowering his voice to a grave murmur. "Evelyn Tate is dead. Dr. Hayes performed her autopsy."

He paused for a beat before delivering the final blow. "Earlier today."

The officer's jaw slackened.

If she hadn't been a seasoned cop who had seen her fair share of gruesome horrors, she might have screamed right there in the hallway.

A murdered victim—whose corpse had literally just been cut open on an autopsy table—was suddenly the prime suspect in a kidnapping?

Could it just be someone with the exact same name?

But what were the odds of a coincidence that spectacular?

Evelyn drops dead, and a second later, a kidnapper surfaces bearing her exact identity...

"Wait a minute... Mr. Peyton, Dr. Hayes, are we completely certain these two Evelyns are the same person?"

Nathan and Nora exchanged a loaded glance. Instead of answering the officer's question, they made a unified decision. "We need to speak with her."
