Laura was entirely incredulous. "Did she commit suicide out of guilt?"

"Did she realize there was no way to get away with kidnapping me, so she took her own life?"

Laura's emotional volatility spiked violently as she spoke.

Her thrashing movements caused the hospital bed to rock, emitting faint, metallic groans.

"Actually, Evelyn died yesterday. I performed her autopsy this morning."

Laura's eyes widened to an unnatural degree, genuinely horrified by Nora's revelation.

"That... how is that even possible?"

"The woman who kidnapped me was named Evelyn Tate!"

"How could she have died last night?"

A sharp glint flashed in Nora's eyes at those words. She gave a microscopic tilt of her head, locking gazes with Nathan.

The two exchanged a silent, loaded look before Nathan took the reins. "Are you absolutely certain the Evelyn who died is the same Evelyn who kidnapped you?"

Laura froze.

It was as if she had suddenly remembered that crucial detail. She scratched her head awkwardly. "Oh, right, right. I... I guess I just let you guys lead me to that conclusion."

"When you said the name, I just assumed the dead woman had to be..."

Nora and Nathan offered zero response.

Sensing the shift in the room's temperature, the female officer glanced down at her watch to mercifully change the subject. "Your wounds have been dressed. Ms. Morgan, are you ready to head down for your scans now?"

Laura staggered slightly as she stood up.

Keeping her gaze fixed firmly on the floor, avoiding Nathan and Nora entirely, she gave a stiff nod. "Y-yes. Let's go."

The officer stepped forward to support her weight.

Laura clutched the officer's arm, flashing her a fragile smile. "Thank you so much, Officer. You're all such good people."

"It's just part of the job."

The two murmured to each other as they shuffled out toward the radiology department. Nora tracked their retreating figures until they disappeared around the corner, then retreated to a secluded alcove with Nathan.
