"Do you know what you look like right now?"
Nathan knew Nora wasn't going to say anything complimentary.
But he played along anyway.
"What?"
"A jerk."
Nathan chuckled deeply.
"And what does that make you?"
"A flustered little girl?"
Nathan's gaze roamed slowly over Nora's face. "I had no idea my Nora had such wild fantasies."
Nora completely ignored whatever nonsense he was spouting.
"Alright, stop messing around!"
They had been having a serious conversation about the case, and this guy suddenly derailed everything.
Nora reached up and rubbed her tingling lips. "If we aren't going to talk about the case, I'm going back to my room."
"We'll talk about the case."
Nathan scooped her up, shifting her onto his lap.
Feeling the rock-hard muscles of his thighs beneath her, Nora felt a spike of awkwardness and tried to adjust her position.
But the moment she shifted, she heard a sharp intake of breath. Thinking she had hurt him, she turned around, alarmed. "Did I hurt you?"
She hadn't used that much force, and Nathan certainly wasn't that fragile.
"No."
Seeing that his expression was far from pain, but rather something dark and complicated, Nora froze. The realization crashed into her a second later, and she snapped her head forward, refusing to look at him.
She thought ignoring it would make it go away, but her ears were burning crimson.
"Exactly."
Nathan continued, "It's highly likely someone knows we're investigating Lawrence, so they served his mother up on a silver platter."
"They want us to dig up more leads through her."
"And this person knows about the blackmail case. They might even know exactly who is terrorizing these celebrities. But instead of exposing them, they're playing along and running interference."
Nora's eyes went wide.
While Nathan's theory lacked hard evidence right now.
Looking back at the entire sequence of events, his explanation was the only one that perfectly connected all the dots.
"So we play right into their hands and keep following the trail Lawrence left behind?"
Nathan was quiet for a long moment before answering, "Yes."
"But before we make a move, I need to report this to my superiors. I have a gut feeling this case is going to pull in a lot more than just a few blackmailed celebrities."
