Nathan just stared at him. The sheer intensity of his gaze was suffocating, silently radiating a dangerous, oppressive weight.
Toby visibly shrank under the pressure, quickly masking his shock with an awkward chuckle. "I... I was just curious."
Nathan said nothing.
The silence stretched on for agonizing minutes. Finally, unable to take it anymore, Toby broke. "Mr. Peyton... did Mrs. Caldwell really die of natural causes?"
This time, Nathan engaged.
"Why do you ask?"
"Well, if she died normally, shouldn't her body be at the hospital? If she's here at the precinct, that means there's something suspicious about her death, right?"
Nathan gave a slow nod.
He was giving answers that technically confirmed things while revealing absolutely nothing. Behind the two-way glass, Nora's eyes narrowed.
She didn't take her gaze off Toby for a second, scrutinizing his every micro-expression.
Completely in the dark about what Nathan was actually thinking, Toby gripped his hands together tightly.
"Mrs. Caldwell really had a tragic life."
Whether he was trying to break the tension or genuinely mourning the sudden confirmation of a friend's passing, the words spilled out. "Back in the day, she killed herself trying to provide for Lawrence. She worked the fields, sold vegetables on the street corners in the city."
"She was an incredible cook, too. Whenever anyone in the village hosted a massive dinner, they'd hire her to run the kitchen."
"She was an honest, hardworking woman. She never gouged anyone just because she was talented; she only asked for a fair wage."
"Everyone respected her. We all thought that once Lawrence made it big, she'd finally get to rest and enjoy life. Who knew that animal would throw his own mother away? Once he got rich, he never spent a dime on her. He never even came home."
"People used to say she'd stand at the edge of the village every single day, terrified she'd miss him if he finally drove back."
"She waited and waited... I thought she'd at least get to see him one last time."
When the cops surrounded her, Moira didn't panic. If anything, a look of grim resignation washed over her face, as if she had been waiting for the axe to fall.
Given her intimate ties to Lawrence and her blatant attempt to run, she was hauled straight into an interrogation room.
"Boss, you think she's going to talk?"
The detectives felt that nabbing Moira was a little too convenient and worried they were walking into a trap.
Meanwhile, Nora and Nathan were in the breakroom, tearing into the massive, gourmet lunch boxes sent over by Harold Peyton.
Because of the extravagant meal, the entire Special Task Force was currently feasting like royalty.
Nathan and Nora were only just eating now because of the prolonged interrogation with Toby.
"Hard to say."
In three massive mouthfuls, Nathan practically inhaled his entire meal. Despite eating like a starved wolf, he somehow managed to make it look effortlessly refined.
