A staff member noticed the commotion and quickly rushed over. "Is everything alright?"
"I'll get this cleaned up. Please be careful not to slip."
Just moments ago, the team had been praising the restaurant's excellent service. Now, looking at the perfectly marinated "lamb ribs" and the smiling employee approaching them, this perfectly ordinary scene suddenly felt grotesquely twisted.
No one doubted her.
As a seasoned medical examiner, if she said they were human ribs, they were human ribs.
A bone-deep chill crept up their legs, rapidly paralyzing their entire bodies.
Human remains were being served in a public restaurant. Did the staff know?
Was this a horrific accident, or was this place systematically serving human flesh?
"Boss, what's the play?"
They had a major crime scene right in front of them. The standard procedure would be to flash their badges, shut the place down, and call in the Forensics Division to test every piece of meat in the building.
But the restaurant was packed. If they announced what was on the plates, the resulting panic would be impossible for their small team to contain.
Instead of answering, he pulled out his phone and made a quick call.
Hearing him methodically orchestrate the backup plan, the rest of the table let out a collective breath they didn't know they were holding.
Compared to the rest of the lively restaurant, their table looked completely bizarre.
The food on their plates smelled divine, and the table was practically overflowing with expensive cuts of meat.
Yet, no one touched their silverware.
In that moment, they were all profoundly grateful for their professional training, keeping them from losing their minds on the spot.
If even one of them had puked, all hell would have broken loose.
Backup arrived quickly. Using a plausible excuse, they efficiently evacuated the dining area.
