It made logical sense.
But it still grated on Nathan's nerves.
"Go on, then."
He pretended to just be idly scrolling on his phone, but he discreetly opened his notes app.
"Give me their names, phone numbers, and departments."
He didn't look up. His voice carried a tight, jealous edge he didn't even realize he was projecting.
He typed 'Rival Number 1' into the app, but after waiting a few minutes without hearing Nora speak, he finally realized something was wrong.
"Well?"
He looked up, meeting her half-amused, knowing stare.
Nathan's heart skipped a beat.
He instinctively forced a casual smile. "What is it?"
Nora put her phone down and crossed her arms, staring him down. "Are you sure you're asking this for the case?"
Knowing she had caught him, he felt a flicker of embarrassment, but he quickly covered it with righteous defensiveness. "What else would it be for?"
As her fiancé, it was perfectly reasonable for him to gather intelligence on the competition, wasn't it?
Having such a highly sought-after woman came with its fair share of headaches.
Nathan considered himself to be incredibly even-tempered. If he were anyone else, Aaron Wells would have been permanently dealt with by now.
It wasn't like his family lacked the resources to make that happen.
But Nathan could tell Nora had absolutely zero feelings for the guy, so he couldn't be bothered to waste energy on him.
Only an idiot fixated on his rivals.
A smart man, like himself, knew the real victory lay in locking down the girl.
"You know exactly what you're doing."
Nora called his bluff without pressing the issue.
She hadn't caught on at first, but his jealous tone gave away that he was just fishing for information.
She didn't know whether to laugh or shake her head.
Who would have thought the esteemed Captain Peyton could be this petty?
