The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 601

Nora understood Nathan's meaning.

She remembered how much had happened yesterday when she stepped out for just a bit, and finally nodded.

"Okay."

"Just buy whatever you want, and grab me a coffee."

Nathan opened his mouth, wanting to say coffee early in the morning wasn't a great idea, but seeing Nora's lack of energy and knowing she had important things to do today, he figured the caffeine might help. "Alright."

"Iced Americano?"

"Yeah."

Nathan agreed.

After he left, Nora got up to wash up.

Because of everything that had happened, she now had a conditioned reflex whenever she entered the bathroom.

She checked the shower head to make sure nothing was out of the ordinary, then walked over to the sink and squeezed a dollop of cleanser into her palm.

Turning the faucet on and off, she worked up a lather in her hands and gently massaged it into her skin in soft circles.

Creak—

A very faint sound echoed in the room.

Nora's hands paused.

Almost at the exact moment the thought "someone came in" popped into her head, she cranked the faucet on full blast.

The rushing water drowned out all other noise.

Nora hastily rinsed her face and flattened herself behind the bathroom door.

The footsteps outside grew louder.

It was exactly as she expected.

Right after Nathan and the nurse left, someone had sneaked in. The intruder clearly knew she was alone in the ward.

Their presence here wasn't a coincidence.

If she had merely suspected that the mastermind was targeting her after the previous incidents...

She was absolutely certain of it now.

Once is a fluke, twice is a coincidence, but three times is a pattern.

"Knock, knock, knock."

The person outside didn't say a word, just maintained a steady rhythm of knocking.

Nora kept up the act, asking in confusion, "What's wrong? Did something happen?"

She turned off the faucet.

The hospital room was dead silent.

She muttered, "My face is full of soap, what's going on with you?"

"Why aren't you saying anything?"

As she spoke, the breathing on the other side of the door grew noticeably heavier.

Nora had worked in the police department for years; the more a situation made her heart race, the calmer she became.

She kept muttering, "Just wait for me to wash my face..."

She crept stealthily to the edge of the door and reached out to turn the knob.

In that moment, she was incredibly grateful that the lighting in the bathroom was dim, making it impossible for the person outside to see her shadow.
