The Captain I Married by Chance novel Chapter 76

The hair on Aaron’s arms stood on end.

He thought of all the benefits Mia had promised him and squeezed his eyes shut.

When he opened them again, they held nothing but fanatical devotion to Mia.

“Of course, I know. Mia, you’re the person I love most in this world. Nothing can change that.”

Mia finally smiled, satisfied.

“Good boy.”

Aaron smiled back and carried Mia into another elevator.

As the doors closed, he lowered his gaze, hiding the darkness in his eyes.

In the other elevator.

Nora noticed Nathan hadn't pressed a floor button and couldn’t help but remind him, “Nathan, you haven’t pressed the floor yet.”

Nathan snapped back to reality. “Oh,” he said. “No need.”

Nora raised an eyebrow in surprise. “No need? Are you going to my floor too?”

Nathan nodded.

Nora was even more confused.

“Thank you for helping me out back there.”

If it hadn’t been for Nathan, she would have been stuck downstairs dealing with Aaron and Mia’s nauseating display for much longer.

“But… what are you doing here?”

Nathan met Nora’s gaze.

Seeing the suspicion in her eyes, a small smile played on his lips.

“I’m meeting someone.”

What a coincidence, he was meeting someone too?

And by an even greater coincidence, on the same floor as her?

Nora may have been a medical examiner, not a detective who solved cases, but she had the necessary sharpness and instincts.

Her gut told her this was too much of a coincidence.

“Nathan…”

Out of respect for her superior, Nora was about to confess that she was there for a blind date when the elevator doors opened, revealing Leonard’s slightly anxious face.

Leonard’s frown relaxed the moment he saw Nora. “Nora!”

Nora hadn’t expected to see him here. She scowled in distaste, her voice cold and merciless. “Mr. Hayes.”

A flash of hurt crossed Leonard’s eyes.

Instead of correcting her form of address, he turned a critical eye to Nathan. “And who is this?”

Nora spoke before Nathan could. “He’s a colleague of mine.”

She shot Nathan a meaningful look.

Nathan raised an eyebrow. Just as he was about to speak, a figure rushed over. “Nathan, you’re finally here! Quick, everyone’s waiting for you!”

Without paying any mind to the others present, the person grabbed Nathan and pulled him toward a private dining room.

Watching this, a hint of confusion appeared in Nora’s eyes.

Was Nathan really meeting someone?

Had she been overthinking things?
