His mouth moved against mine, unhurried and thorough. One hand cupped the back of my neck while the other settled on my hip, thumb stroking small circles through the fabric of my dress.
When we finally broke apart, both breathing harder, his eyes were dark with want.
“We should get a room,” I murmured against his mouth.
“We have a room. Very nice room, actually.”
“I meant stop kissing and go to it before we scandalize the crew.”
He grinned, stealing another quick kiss. “Where’s your sense of adventure?”
“Currently warring with my sense of decorum.”
“Decorum’s overrated.” But he released me, though his hand found mine immediately. “Come on. Let’s enjoy the view a bit longer before the sun sets completely.”
We settled back on the cushioned seating, Alexander’s arm around my shoulders, my head resting against his chest. The yacht continued its steady course along the California coast, cutting through calm water.
“Look.” Alexander pointed toward the horizon. “Right there.”
I followed his gesture and saw it: a spray of water shooting up from the ocean’s surface, followed by a massive dark shape breaching.
“Whale!” I sat up straighter, gripping his arm. “Is that a whale?”
“Gray whale. Told you we might get lucky.”
The creature surfaced again, closer this time, its enormous body gracefully arcing through the water before disappearing beneath the waves. Then another appeared, and another.
“There are three of them,” I breathed, watching in awe as they moved parallel to the yacht.
‘Probably a mother and calf with an escort.” Alexander stood, pulling me with him to the railing. “Captain, can we slow down?”
‘Already on it, Mr. Carter,” Captain Reynolds called back.
The yacht’s engines quieted, our forward momentum slowing until we were barely moving. The whales continued their journey, close enough now that I could make out details. Barnacles dotting their massive heads, the spray from their blowholes catching the fading sunlight.
“They’re incredible,” I whispered, like speaking louder might scare them away.
Alexander stood behind me, his arms wrapped around my waist, his chin resting on my shoulder. We watched in silence as
the whales passed, their powerful tails propelling them effortlessly through the water.
“The calf’s probably heading north with its mother,” Alexander said quietly. “Migration route.”
“Where are they going?”
