**Dust Writes New Stories by Rei Holt Wilder**
**Chapter 25**
As I prepared to extinguish the last embers of my cigarette, a familiar sound pierced the stillness of the parking garage—the sharp click of heels striking the concrete floor. I glanced up just in time to see Scarlett emerge from between the rows of parked cars, her white dress shimmering under the unforgiving glare of the fluorescent lights above. For a fleeting moment, she froze, her eyes locking onto mine, a flicker of surprise crossing her features. But it was gone in an instant, replaced by a practiced nonchalance as she rummaged through her purse, retrieving her keys with a flourish.
“Look what Daddy bought me yesterday,” she announced, her voice laced with a mixture of pride and entitlement. With a press of a button, the headlights of her brand-new Mercedes sprang to life, illuminating the dim garage with a bright glow. “Do you like it?”
I forced my face into an expression of indifference, but inside, my fingers tightened around my own keys until the metal pressed painfully into my palm. The disparity between us was glaringly obvious—while I had been cornered into trading my own body for a business deal to salvage my company, my father had casually bestowed a luxury vehicle worth more than most people’s annual salaries upon my stepsister.
“It’s very nice,” I replied flatly, my voice devoid of any warmth as I opened the door to my own car.
Her face twisted in fury, a storm of emotions swirling within her as I pressed the accelerator and drove away, leaving her behind, shouting a string of obscenities that faded into the background. It was undeniably childish and petty, and I was fully aware of that. But for the first time in what felt like an eternity, a sense of satisfaction surged through me, igniting a flicker of joy amidst the chaos of my life.
