Chapter 85: Do I Want It?-2
I cross my arms slightly
“To the flowers.”
He is silent.
“To unexpected visitors.”
His gaze is fixed on me.
“And to–tonight.”
Alexander breathes slowly.
“Clara,” he says finally, “I thought that-”
He stops.
I observe him calmly.
“You thought this might be something else.”
I don’t say it as an accusation, I say it as a reality.
His jaw tightens slightly.
“Yes.”
His answer is direct, honest.
“Because I like you.”
His words are suspended among us. And for a second I feel guilty.
Because I understand perfectly what that confession means.
Alexander is not a man who says things lightly.
“I know,” I reply softly.
He watches me carefully.
“But I also think it would be unfair of me to let you think I’m in the same place.”
Silence sets in again, Alexander runs a hand over his chin.
“Is there anyone else?”
The question comes quickly, directly.
My heart beats a little harder, I don’t respond right away.
Because the answer is not that simple, but an image inevitably appears in my mind.

Chapter 35 ParWant It?
Ethan leaning against the door of his office. His fingers brushing my lips.
“Then I have a half chance… don’t I?”
Alexander is still waiting.
I look up at him.
“There is… things that I am still resolving.”
It’s not a lie, but it’s not the whole truth either.
He watches me for a few more seconds. Then nod slowly.

“I understand. I guess it has to do with the person who showed up that night at your apartment, right?”
His voice is calm. But I know he’s processing the answer.
“I didn’t want to put you in an awkward situation,” he adds.
“You didn’t.”
He lets out a small smile.
“Well… maybe a little.”
I can’t help but smile back at him. Alexander has always had that light way of taking the weight off things,
but there’s still something more in his eyes.
Something that does not disappear so easily.
“I guess that answers why you don’t want me to visit you tonight,” he says.
I tilt my head slightly.
“Yes.”
He nods again.
“Then I think I’d better stop trying to surprise you.”
“Alexander…”
But he raises a hand gently.
“Okay, Clara.”
There is no reproach in his voice, only acceptance. An apparent one.
“I prefer to know where I stand.”
His words are sincere, and that makes me respect him even more.
Alexander takes a step back.
“See you at the next meeting.”

I–nod
“Yes.”
He begins to walk down the hallway.
But before turning the corner, he stops for a second and looks at me again.
“By the way….
He raised an eyebrow.
“If that person you’re working things out for… turns out to be an idiot…”
A small smile appears on his face.
“You can still call me.”
I can’t help but laugh softly.
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
I’m about to move forward when I hear his voice again.
“Clara.”
