Chapter 217: Through her tears, Part 2.-2
“Prepare a guest room, Linstruct, removing my jacket with an automatic movement. “Have it ready right
now.
“Yes, sir.”
She doesn’t ask questions, she doesn’t need to.
I take the jacket in one hand and with the other make a slight gesture toward Vanessa
“Come.”
I don’t touch her, but I walk knowing she’s following me.
I lead her to one of the more secluded rooms in the house. It’s not the main room. It’s not the formal one It’s… more intimate. More enclosed. A space with a minibar, low sofas, and dim lighting. Private… Just what she needs right now.
She comes in and stands for a second, as if she doesn’t quite know what to do with her body
1 head straight to the bar.
“Do you want wine or whiskey?”
I don’t turn around yet, I open the cabinet. I take out two glasses.
“I want the strongest you have.”
Her answer comes without hesitation, without nuance, without care. That… makes me barely raise my
gaze.
I nod to myself, I look for a darker, heavier bottle.
I pour the two glasses, the liquid falls with that dry, clean sound that breaks the silence.
I turn, I hand her one, she takes it and sits down. I do the same across from her, for a few seconds. neither of us speaks.
T
She looks at the glass, as if she’s measuring something. And then… She brings it to her lips. She takes a long, straight gulp, without pausing, without preparation. And there’s no reaction. None. Not a gesture, not a grimace, nothing. That… does surprise me, because that kind of drink.. burns. But she doesn’t care Not
now.
I leave my glass untouched on the low table, I watch her. I wait and then. She looks up, straight at me
Her eyes are still red, but now… there’s something more, anger. Pain. Wounded pride
“Ethan fired me from the company.”
The sentence falls dry, without embellishment, without drama But it weigh heavily
I remain still, analyzing. I don’t interrupt her I don’t react immediately, because it’s not just what she said It’s what it implies.
She holds my gaze, as if she’s waiting for something. An answer, a reaction. But I. I’m not impulsive in These things.
I tilt my head slightly
“How?”
My voice is calm, but not gentle. Precise, I want to understand, not console… not yet.
She lets out a small laugh… bitter.
“Like this…” she says, raising her glass slightly. “With paperwork. With speeches. With that damn calm he has when he’s already made up his mind.”
I barely clench my jaw, Ethan.. Of course, that fits.
“Why?”
This time I hold the question, because that’s what matters. Not the fact. The reason….
She watches me and for a second… it seems like she’s going to say it all. But instead… She lowers her gaze. She clutches the glass between her fingers and murmurs: “For her, what else would it be… Clara Always Clara.”
I exhale slowly… I lean back slightly on the sofa. And now… everything starts to take shape in my head. It’s not just a dismissal, it’s a move. An emotional decision disguised as a business structure. And that is interesting.
I look at her again; she’s broken. Yes, but she’s not weak. She’s a woman who has just lost a position and something more. Something she clearly… never truly had.
I pick up my glass and take a sip. Now I’m ready. I feel the burning sensation in my throat.
And I put the glass back on the table.
“So…” I say calmly, “this didn’t end the way you expected.”
It’s a statement.
She looks up again, and in her eyes…. there’s fire, pain… but also something else. Something I recognize something dangerous. I barely smile.
