The CEO's Regret: Darling, Don’t Leave Me novel Chapter 305

Chapter 219: No Mistakes…-1

Vanessa

I breathe slowly, deeply. And for the first time since I left that building the air goes in without hurting. The whiskey doesn’t burn the same anymore, now it has flavor. Bitter, strong but manageable. Like I should have been from the start.

I hold the glass between my fingers, looking at h for a second before bringing it to my lips. This time I don’t drink as if I need to numb myself… but as if I’m thinking. Listening to him, understanding him… Him, Alexander, his words, his way of seeing things. And I hate to admit it… but he’s right. From the outside…! looked weak, predictable, pathetic.

I barely press my lips together and lower my gaze for a moment. I feel… exposed, not in front of Ethan. But in front of him, in front of a man who doesn’t really know me… and yet he was able to read me with an ease that makes me uncomfortable. That… I don’t like it, not at all.

I exhale slowly, deeply, as if with that I could also release the version of myself that arrived here a few minutes ago.

I look up, I observe him. And I’m no longer the same person who was crying in a car.

“How do you do it?”

My voice is firmer now, more focused

“How do you manage not to let your emotions take over?”

I hold his gaze; I really want to know. It’s not an empty question, not just for conversation. It’s a need

Alexander doesn’t answer immediately, he picks up his glass. He swirls it slightly between his fingers, as if gauging his response, as if choosing which part of himself to reveal.

“I’m not perfect, Vanessa”

His voice is calm, controlled.

“At some point… I did let my emotions take over.”

I observe him more closely, I hadn’t expected that

“And what I did… made everything worse.”

I frown slightly

My mind tries to connect that with what little I know about him, with what I’ve seen, with what I serie

“What do you mean?”

My tone is low, but direct. And then… I see it, that subtle change in his expression. It’s not weakness, not obvious pain. But there’s something there. Something that wasn’t there before

“A while ago..

His gaze drifts for a second, as if he’s remembering

“I wanted to lighten things up with her… with Clara”

My body goes still, elert. Of course. It had to be her… It always ends up being her

“I was determined to do things with her,” he continues. “Because I brought her to my family. as a friend. It was a family celebration, the perfect excuse to bring her.”

He pauses briefly and then looks at me.

“But deep down… my intentions were different.”

I feel something inside me stir. Curiosity, interest, strategy.

“I wanted to know if I had my mother’s approval.

I barely incline my head; that…. is important. More than it seems.

“And my mother fully approved.”

Silence… one that arrived tinged with pain… And then….

“It was her, Vanessa

His voice doesn’t rise, doesn’t tremble. But it’s firm, convinced. And that… weighs heavily.

I watch him intently, analyzing every word, every intention, every implication. So I’m not the only one, I’m not the only one who has loved someone who didn’t choose her.

I’m not the only one who saw a future… where the other didn’t. Interesting, very interesting.

I lean back on the sofa, slowly crossing one leg over the other. More comfortable, more present, more myself.

“And yet… it didn’t happen.”

It’s not a question, it’s a statement. His story… didn’t end the way he wanted. And that means something, a

lot.

I observe him closely.

“What did you do?”

I tilt my head slightly

“What ruined everything?”

Because if he failed. I want to know how. I want to know at what point a man like him. loses And more importantly what he learned from it. Because if there’s one thing I’m sure of now it’s that I’m not going to make the same mistakes again. Not again, not with Ethan. Not with me. And maybe just maybe…. Alexander has answers that will help me more than I expected.

I smile slightly, very faintly

Because clearly. I murmur, looking him straight in the eyes, “you’re not the kind of man who loses without learning something in retum.”
