Chapter 221: One Last Attempt.
Alexander
I watch her silently for a few more seconds. I’ve said enough. More than I would normally to anyone, more than I should. But I don’t regret it, not with her. Because in her eyes there’s something I recognize… something that needs no explanation: she understands. Not everything, but enough. And that’s enough.
I calmly place the glass on the table and stand up.
“There’s a room ready for you,” I say, in a more neutral tone, ending the conversation withou needing to be explicit. “I’ll go with you.”
She nods, without arguing, without dramatizing this time. Good.
I go first, crossing the hallway of my house with firm steps. I feel her presence behind me, quieter than when she arrived. More restrained.
The guest room door is open. The light is on. Everything in order, as it should be.
I stop to the side and give her space to go in first.
Vanessa passes by, glances around, but I know she’s not really looking at the room. She’s thinking, processing. Turning inside.
I stay in the doorway, not intruding more than necessary. And just as I’m about to leave… I speak. Because there’s something that needs to be clear.
“I don’t know how this will end…”
My voice is firm, unadorned.
She turns to face me.
“But I’m not going to step aside without trying at least once.”
Silence.
The sentence hangs between us.
She blinks.
“Just once?”
I nod.

“Just once.”
No doubts, no nuances.
“If it doesn’t work… I’ll step aside.”
I see her shake her head immediately, almost instinctively.
“No… you can’t do that…”
I raise an eyebrow slightly. There it is. The difference between her and me.
“Of course I can.”
My tone doesn’t rise, but it hardens.
“And I will.”
I take another step closer to the door, without going all the way in.
“I’m not going to spend years chasing after them.”
I look her straight in the eye.
“Wasting my life… waiting.”
I don’t need to say “like you.” But I do it anyway.
“Like you did.”
The blow is clean, precise. And I know it hurts her, but I also know it’s necessary.
#25 Poin
“I’ll try one more time.” I breathe slowly, controlled. “And if it doesn’t work…” I barely shrug. “Fuck her and her Ethan.”
Vanessa shakes her head again. Louder this time, and in her expression… there’s no longer just surprise. There’s rejection, discomfort. Because what I just said… isn’t something she can accept so easily. Not when her world revolves around him, I can tell. Of course I can tell, and for a second… I consider softening it. But I don’t, it’s not my style. Not tonight.
I watch her for another moment. And then, I simply nod slightly.
“Rest.”
My tone lowers only slightly; it’s not harshness now. It’s closure.
“You need it.”
Chapter 221 One Last Attempt
I don’t wait for an answer, I don’t need one. I turn and walk away down the hall, leaving the door ajar behind me. And as I walk… my mind isn’t on her. It’s on someone else, a woman who shouldn’t occupy so much space in my thoughts…. and yet she does. Clara.
I clench my jaw slightly, once. Just once. It’s not much to ask, not for someone like me, not for someone who already understands that playing games… only makes things worse. This time it will be different, cleaner. More precise, without stupid mistakes. No impulses, no desperation. Or so I tell myself, as I walk toward my room… with an idea forming with dangerous clarity in my head. Because one opportunity… is more than enough. If you know exactly… how to use it.
At that moment I feel confident, because I have my emotions under control, but… inside there’s a slight doubt… is it possible? Will I be able to do anything? Will it work?
Vanessa isn’t someone I completely trust, but she’s the only person with whom I share a common goal. For now, things will be fine with her… for now, I just hope she lets herself be tamed like she did tonight. She seemed like a wild, runaway horse, one that almost inspired pity in me. How sad, she’s a beautiful, attractive woman… she has the potential to attract any man, but those outbursts detract from her.
