Chapter 246:1 Am the “Problem”

There are moments that don’t quite fit into the day, small cracks. Details that shouldn’t matter… but they do. That was one of those.
Several days ago… I was in my office in New York, reviewing projections for Boston when there was a knock at the door with that rhythm I recognize without even looking. Two soft knocks, one firm one.
“Come in.”
The door opened and Daniel Rivas, my personal assistant of many years, entered. Efficient, discreet. An more importantly… loyal.
He closed the door behind him more carefully than usual, which already said something. He didn’t speak immediately. He approached the desk, a folder in his hand, but didn’t place it on the table.
He stood there, waiting.
“Speak,” I said without fully looking up.
“I suppose you don’t know.”
I raised my eyes; that piqued my interest.
“What?”
Daniel hesitated for a moment, just a moment. But it was enough for him to understand that what was coming wasn’t routine.
“Boss… I just came out of Mr. Richard Hale’s office.”
I settled back in my chair. Hale. Board member. Old, meticulous. And… careful with information.
“I went to get a signature,” Daniel continued. “Documents for the expansion project.”
I nodded… Nothing out of the ordinary.
“When I came out…” he paused, “Miss Clara Sinclair came in.”
My body didn’t move, but my attention shifted completely.
“And?”
“Before I closed the door… I heard something.”
I leaned slightly forward.
“What did you hear?”
Daniel lowered his voice, instinctively.
“She was explaining something to Mr. Hale. She said that, after the expansion..he searched for the exac

words “she had considered making some changes.”
Silence… My mind started racing. Too fast.
“What kind of changes?”
Daniel shook his head.
“That’s what caught my attention.”
I clenched my jaw slightly.
“Go on.”
“I was curious…” he admitted, “So I stayed behind the door for a few more seconds.”
I didn’t interrupt him.
“And then I heard your name.”
My name…
That’s when I leaned back in my chair.
“What exactly did she say?”
“I don’t know for sure.”
“Daniel.”
“I don’t know,” he repeated. “Only… that those changes had to do with you.”
Silence. One of those silences that doesn’t break easily.
“So?”
“Someone walked by in the hall,” he added. “I couldn’t stay any longer.”
Of course… There’s always a moment when information cuts off right where it starts to become useful.
“But it seemed important,” he concluded. “Delicate.”
I looked at him closely. Daniel doesn’t exaggerate. He never does.
“Are you sure about what you heard?”
“Absolutely.”
I nodded once, slowly.
“Good.”
Daniel finally placed the folder on the desk.
“That’s all.”

“For now.”
He understood, nodded, and left quietly.
The door closed, and the office fell silent. But my mind didn’t.
“Changes.”
“After the expansion.”
“Regarding Alexander.”

I rested my elbows on the desk and interlaced my fingers. Clara… Always so proper. So professional, so… transparent. And yet, she had gone to talk to Hale. Without saying a word, about me.
I let out a low, humorless laugh.
“Interesting…”
The rest of the day continued: meetings, signings, decisions. Everything in order, everything running smoothly. And yet… no. Because every conversation, every document, every pause… led back to the same point. Clara talking about changes, Clara talking about me… without me.
The idea of change didn’t bother me; what bothered me was not being part of the equation. That’s not personal. It’s structural… When someone starts moving pieces around without warning… there’s an intention behind it. And I don’t ignore intentions; I uncover them. I waited, I didn’t react immediately, I didn’t confront Clara… i didn’t ask questions, I didn’t do anything impulsive. Because hasty responses are for emotional people. I prefer the right moment, and it came…
At the end of the day, when the hallways empty, when/decisions soften, when men let their guard down. Richard Hale’s office was still lit.
I knocked once.
“Come in.”
I entered unhurriedly. Hale was behind his desk, reviewing some documents, his glasses perched low on
his nose.
He looked up.
“Alexander.”
“Richard.”
I closed the door and walked to the desk. I didn’t sit down, not yet.
“I need to talk to you.”
He set the papers aside.
“Suie.”
I looked at him directly, without hesitation.

know Clara spoke with you.”

It wasn’t a question, it was a statement. Hale didn’t respond immediately; that was an answer in itself.
“I need to know what’s going on.”
Silence…
He took off his glasses with excessive calm.
“We’ll talk about it later.”
I smiled, briefly… Dangerously.
“No.”
I leaned slightly across the desk.
“We’ll talk about it now.”
Hale held my gaze.
“It’s not the right time.”
“For whom?”
His expression tightened slightly.
“Alexander…”
“We’ve been colleagues for a long time,” I interrupted, “If something happens… I should know.”
My voice didn’t rise much, but enough. Enough to shift the conversation from conversation to pressure. Hale looked down for a second, just one. But I saw it, and that was enough. Then he nodded, slowly. As if accepting that he couldn’t avoid the subject.
